James TOMLIN
« on: Thursday 12 May 11 18:02 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information on James Tomlin who was born about 1802.  I believe he was married three times to Ann (my John's mother) Eliza and Mary.  The census all find him in and around Hemel-Hampstead but I know the family lived in Boxmoor.

Hi

I have a record of the burial of Ann Tomlin, 9th Feb 1847 at St John Boxmoor, aged 45, I think she is most probably your Ann, in which case that gives us a birth date of c1802. From Family Search IGI there is a marriage for James Tomlin & Ann Golding, 23rd Dec 1826 St Michael St Albans & a birth for Ann Golding 13th March 1802 in Hemel Hempstead, parent Samuel & Sarah, could be a possible first marriage.

From Free BMD there is a marriage for James Tomlin to Eliza Turney June qtr 1848 Vol 6 Page 677 & also a possible death for Eliza Tomlin Mar qtr 1857 Vol 3a page 202 both Hemel Hempstead.

I see from the 1861 where James is now with Mary apart from his own children there are also Mary's children named How. Free BMD has the marriage of Mary How to James Tomlin June qtr 1857 Vol 3a page 404 Hemel Hempstead, I checked the 1851 & found Mary married to Ezekiel How, Ezekiel died Sep qtr 1855 vol 3a page 177 Hemel Hempstead.  Purely by chance I found on Family Search IGI the birth of Mary & Ezekiel's daughter Angelina born 1853 & her mother is named as Mary Pettifer which falls in nicely with the marriage from Free BMD for Ezekiel How Sep qtr 1841 vol 6 page 703 Hemel Hempstead, other name on page is Mary Ann Pettifer.

Also from the IGI there is a James Tomlin born 30th Sept 1808, christened 23rd Oct 1808 Hemel Hempstead, parents John Tomlin & Charlotte.

Hope this hasn't confused you to much & has helped a little. :D

oh my God!!! You are wonderful.  Where did you find the record for Ann Tomlin's death?  I will have to try and get a copy.  I felt that my John's mother was Ann Golding but never could find to match as it was before 1837 and BMD records, which I have to rely on as I live in Canada.  I don't know why I didn't think to check Family Search for their marriage.  I will send for James and Eliza Turney's marriage to confirm and alwo Mary How(Pettifer)  I will see if I can get a compy of James and Ann's marriage from St Michael and poss my Johns baptism.  One of James daughter's was named Charlotte, so I can see now where my John and his sister Charlotte got their names.  You have been wonderful Maddie.  Thank you so much.

Hi  ;D

You are more than welcome, pleased I could help. Ann's record came from a burial index for Herts, incidentally I found this record for John Tomlin's burial which might be of interest, 13th Jan 1848, St John Boxmoor, aged 75, his abode was the workhouse so he should be on the 1841.

The record for James marriage to Ann Golding is also on
https://www.hertsdirect.org/ufs/ufsmain?ebz=1_1305370730921&formid=HALS_INDEXES you should be able to order it from there.

Good luck

Thanks again .... My John was born in 1833 in Boxmoor to parents James and Ann,  he died in 1878 in Paddington of Kidney Disease.  John was married 1st to Margaret MacDonald in 1868 and 2nd to Fanny Brandon (Brandom) in 1874.  Fanny and he had 2 children John in 1874 and Alfred John in 1878.  Alfred in my greatgrandfather.

John was a Boatsman and ran a barge up and down the canel.  He also was in the Army for 10 years before his marriage to Margaret, but still working on that end of things, seems he was in trouble with the law a bit.

mmm John Tomlin's death is interesting, it would place his birth abt 1773.  And being in a workhouse instead of living with James shows there was some rift.  You have given me a lot to look into.  Muchly appreciated. Maryann

Hi Maryann

Have you tried FindMyPast for your John's military record, had a quick look on the free index & see there could be 3 possible candidates with no place of birth listed in the Chelsea Pensioners records.

That's a coincidence that John should become a Waterman, Two Waters/Boxmoor is on the Grand Union Canal that runs through to Paddington on that leg. Lots of traffic taking goods to the John Dickinson paper mills through Herts back then. :)

If I can help with anything else just shout.

what is FindMyPast, I've never heard to this before.

When John died  his son alfred took over the barge and ran the Canal, my Granny was born on the barge "the Alfred", her birth was registered in Paddington.
