Suicide 1902 - Possible Newspaper Look Up
« on: Friday 13 May 11 15:48 BST (UK) »
Would a suicide in 1902 be likely to have been reported in the newspapers?
If so what newspapers would be appropriate for Strichen? And are they online?

3xG Grandfather Archibald JAFFRAY hung himself in the coach stables of Strichen 09 Jul 1902.

If the relevant papers aren't online would sks possibly do a look up please?

Was there another Archibald Jaffray in the family.
I found a report of an 18 year old of that name being killed at Borrowhill farm, Strichen. Feb 1898

Yes, that would be Archibald's grandson (from his son, John).
Seems this was not a happy family :(

I feel for Archibald snr.
At least 3 of his daughters had children out of wedlock (1 of them by at least 3 different men).
One grandson (that you have found) met an early death.
His wife died after 4 years of Choreia and then he hung himself the following year  :-\

Aberdeen Weekly Journal Tuesday, February 15, 1898
YOUNG MAN KILLED AT STRICHEN.
A sad accident happened at the farm of Borrowhill on Monday afternoon. Archibald Jaffray second horseman had been driving turnips with a pair of horses and walking alongside the first horse when the second started forward and fell overturning the cart. The horse fell above Jaffray.  When discovered he was quite dead with the shaft across his chest. Deceased was 18 years of age.

I don`t know if this is one of yours but have added it anyway.

Thank you ever so much.

Not sure if Archibald JAFFRAY/Elizabeth WALLACE are related to my line - seems mine didn't make it out of Aberdeenshire until the mid 1900s - but will keep in my notes, just incase ;)

This suicide would probably have been reported in the "Fraserburgh Herald". The paper's not online but microfiche copies are held in Fraserburgh Library. I'm sure you can ask for a look up.The headquarters ( A.L.I.S.) have copies of the Aberdeenshire newspapers & it may be worthwhile checking the Peterhead newspaper as well (The Buchan Observer).
