Hannah Hesbrook - where did she come from?
« on: Friday 13 May 11 17:23 BST (UK) »
My 4 x g.grandfather Samuel Mutton baptised (I think) Crowland, Lincs in 1747, married Hannah Hesbrook on 18 October 1784 in Spalding.  They only appear to have had two children, Mary Ann Mutton (my 3 x g.gran) in 1787 and a Sarah in 1790.  Interestingly, the only parents I can find for Samuel Mutton, are John Mutton and his wife Alice Randal, who married in Thorney, Cambridge.  However when I looked to see how far that was from Crowland, they are only about 5 miles apart, both near to Peterborough.

So on the assumption that my 4 x g.grandfather came from Crowland, married in Spalding (10 miles apart) and had 2 children born in Gedney, (11 miles from Spalding) where did Hannah Hesbrook come from.  The only Hesbrooks I can find on Familysearch where from London.

Any ideas?

Lizzie

Just found another Hesbrook in Norfolk, but no Hannah

Hi Lizzie

Do you know that HESBROOK was Hannah's maiden name, or might it have been a previous married name?

Hi Anna

No I don't know if it was her maiden name or not.  It's possible that Samuel Mutton was married twice as he was bapt 1747 but his first child with Hanna(h) -  FindMyPast has it without the H, - wasn't until 1787 when he would have been about 40.  Seems very old for that era.  If his last child was born in 1790, the oldest Hanna would probably have been would be 48, so born around 1632 oops 1732.  She could well have been married earlier and Hesbrook isn't her maiden name.  However, I haven't found anything on Familysearch.

ps. Leaving here for now, got to go to make the evening meal.

Hi Again

I've just been on the new lincstothepast site and found both the notice of banns and the marriage of Samuel Mutton and Hanna(h) Hesbrook.

The records show that banns were read at  St Mary & St Nicholas Parish Church, Spalding on Sunday 3 October, 10 October and 17 October 1784 and that the couple married on 18 October 1784.  It is just shown that they were both of the parish.  No reference is given to either of them being married/widowed previously and this does show on quite a few records that I checked at random.  Samuel was baptised in Crowland in 1747 so was 37 at the time of his marriage to Hanna.  I can't imagine he wasn't previously married, but perhaps moving to a different parish meant he didn't have to be truthful.

Any suggestions?

Lizzie
