Hardy's of Alfreton
« on: Saturday 14 May 11 11:54 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I would be very grateful for some tips on how to find birth/parents of Benjamin Hardy birth abt 1791 from Alfreton (Riddings), Derbyshire.  I have done a IGI blanket search of Derbyshire & Nottinghamshire and been unable to find anything on there or on birth records (on website I'm subscribed too).
He is listed on 1841 census as a blacksmith but I've found nothing on the directories either around that time.  His marriage is listed in Pallot's as Alfreton but am now a bit stuck.  Any advice would be gratefully received!
Clare

Hi Clare,
Welcome to Rootschat.

I have been unable to find his Christening also but it may have been earlier than 1791 as they Married 1807.
According to the 1841 he was born c 1791 and in Derbys but this may be incorrect.
There is one born to John/SARAH 08 Sept 1778, Alvaston, Derby (F/S Pilot)

You may need to find his Burial or purchase his Death Cert to confirm his correct age.

Firstly the Childrens Baptsims/Christenings of BENJAMIN and SARAH;
MARY ANN 10 January 1808
JOSEPH (Hardey) 1810 (no exact date given)
SARAH 08 December 1812
SOPHIA 28 January 1816
SAMUEL 16 May 1819
CAROLINE 25 November 1821
WILLIAM 29 January 1824
FRANCES 13 March 1825
ELIZABETH 21 October 1827
Childrens names may be a indication of Parents names.

Marriage of Benjamin Hardy and Sarah RILEY is on FreeREG 27 Jan 1807, Alfreton.
Unfortunately no Witnesses names.

You may already know Mary Ann Hardy Married Benjamin DUDDEN 1827 (entry on FreeREG) and a presume their Daug SARAH born c 1838 is on the 1841 Census with Benjamin/Sarah and Family.
Caroline Married James HORSLEY 1841

Hi Trish,
thanks for looking into this soo quickly.  I forgot to write about the Benjamin from Alvaston (I have managed to rule him out as I've found his marriage and children down in the Alvaston area).
I had found the children but I hadn't thought about the children being named after parents.  Nor had I thought about finding the burial, death certificate to find the birth date.  So thank you for your tips, very helpful.
Would the death certificate give the birth place or just the year he was born?

Hi Clare,
The Death Cert will probably just have his age at Death. It depends who the informant was/who was present at the Death.
I have a English 1850 Death Cert that had excellent info but others just have age.
(mine said she was the Widow of Robert Reid, Weaver of Chirnside, Berwick, Scotland)
This enabled me to go back another generation as the informant was her Daughter.

Do you know when and where Benjamin died?

Trish :)

Answered my own question!
Benjamin HARDY, June 1846, Belper, 19 320
(there is another in June 1847 but this is in Ashby de la Zouch Reg District)
I would think the first is him as Sarah Hardy and Frances are still in Riddings, Alfreton in 1851 Census and Sarah is Widowed born c 1787 Alfreton, Derbys.

Hi,
I also think its the 1846 Belper death, I have managed to trace right down from Benjamin but I would really like to find Benjamin's birth/parents.  If the death certificate did give me a birth year where would I start to look for more information on his birth.  Would I have to go and look at christening records in Alfreton or Riddings etc?   or is that where IGI gets it's info from?  Sorry to keep asking so many questions :-\ pre-censuses is quite confusing!!

Yes it does get more confusing the further back we go.
As I said the Childrens names are usually a good hint for the Parents names. Also although the 1841 has Benjamin born in Derbys he may have not been.
Finding his age at Death is the first step though.
