Cecil Jacques Bond - Bournemouth
« on: Saturday 14 May 11 15:49 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find the relatives of Cecil Jacques Bond who was an RAF Air Gunner, killed aged 19 in 1942 when his Stirling bomber crashed in Devon when returning from a mission.  The local villagers near the crash site have recently put up a permanent memorial to the crew and I think it's important that if Cecil has any relatives then they need to be told.  My uncle was one of Cecil's crew mates.

The only information I've got is that he is buried in Bournemouth (I have a photo of the gravestone) and he was the son of Frederick Roberts Bond, and of Nelly Bertha Bond (nee Overtus), of Bournemouth.

I can't find a birth for him at all or any brothers or sisters.  I think I've found the deaths of his mum (1958) and dad (1966) so it all may be a dead end.

If there was a obituary when he died which local paper might it have been in and whereabouts would copies from 1942 now be held?

Any help at all would be gratefully received.

Dave

Sorry, should have said the date of Cecil's death was 21 August 1942.

Overtus is a very rare surname so, if correct, should be the key.

Where did that information come from? Could it have been a mistranscription?

A couple of the references come from Belgium/France so, with the Jacques middle name, perhaps that is where they originate.

To answer your other question, any death notice would have been in the Bournemouth Echo, the microfilmed archive of which is held in the Heritage Centre at Bournemouth Library. Other posters have found them fairly helpful. Their e-mail is heritage@bournemouthlibraries.org.uk .
If they want to charge, or you don't get any joy, let me know and I'll have a look when I get a chance to pop over there.

Thanks Richard and RRYFS
The name Overtus comes from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, so hopefully they got it right. I think I've found part of his dad's service record and a medal card from ww1, he originates from London. I also picked up on the French/Belgium connection for the mum's maiden name. I guess they may have met when Cecil's dad was in the army.

I'll drop the library an email and many thanks for your kind offer.

Had a reply from the Hertitage Centre, no obituary found for Cecil. I have however found out from his RAF service record that he was born in Ecaussinnes-D'Enghien, Belgium on 19/01/1923.  So it's off to the European Board!

Thanks once again for everyone's help
