rare ww1 initials

hello to everyone out there ,
could any www1 boffin, egghead, or very intelligent person help me with my problem.

i have a painting of my great-grandfather in uniform, but am unable to find out what the initals mean. I am told they are very rare and that they still are not 100%  on what they could mean.

above my great-grandfathers sargents stripes are the initials SG could anyone help.

and posted your question there,  as I hate to see a post go unanswered. >:(

So far the suggestion is that it could be LG,  to stand for Lewis Gunner.  The other suggestion made is that a photo to examine would be helpful.

Is there any way you could get a digital photo of the painting,  or scan an ordinary photo?
