1841 Census Matthew and Sarah Pickering
« on: Tuesday 26 April 05 13:00 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Anyone able to look up Matthew and Sarah Pickering in the 1841 Census of Leicester. I know Sarah died 18 July 1841 at Regent St St Mary Leicester although it does not give a street number I was wondering if that would narrow the location down for some kind soul?

Matthew was born 1776 in Malton Yorkshire and listed in his will of 1853 as a Victualler. I'm hoping that the 1841 census may also list his 4 sons, John b circa. 1813, Charles b. 1817 Melton Mowbray, Henry b. 1820 Melton Mowbray and Christopher b. 1822 Melton Mowbray.

If you can help me I appreciate it.

Cheers,

Julie Pickering

Greeting’s Julie…….

It will take me some time to find them on the 1841. As there is not Index search programme
So it’s a trawl through page by page
But in the meantime there’s what I’ve found on the 1851. Census. which gives you the Number on Regent St.

Mike your an absolute champion...

Thankyou thankyou thankyou...

and please dont go to too much trouble on the 1841 census, I understand it is a nightmare with no index. I'm patiently waiting for it to be available on CD but that could be forever and although i'm not too old, I'm very impatient....

Cheers your wonderful

This is all just brilliant, wonderful, a delight to my eyes.

I'm thrilled beyond words that you have found this for me.

With regard to Matthew and Sarah's children, I know they all came into Leicester with their parents. Henry would be doing his Chemist/Druggist thing, the son John I think may have gone to Northampton at some stage as that is where he is when his father died in 1852, Charles goes to America but I would have thought that was after 1841, and Christopher the youngest eventually goes to Bedford, Bedfordshire where he is a Carrier but again I feel that would be post 1841.

I'll be grateful for whatever you find and once again thanks a million..Julie

Juls,

Not related as far as I know, but my great great grandfather Edward Henry Butler was in partnership (as Butler, Pickering and Beckett) with Henry Pickering until Henry's death - such a shame Mike's not still here - he'd be loving this!! Planning to visit Henry's grave next time am at Welford Road Cemetery - will say Hello to him for you!! Have recently found a memento from their time in partnership.
