Blaina burials 1943
« on: Monday 16 May 11 22:20 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I would be very grateful for guidance on Blaina burials 1943.
I am researching the Civilian War Dead of my town (Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex). One of them is a Bertram George NINER, buried approx 16 Feb 1943.
Family connections caused his body to be taken to Blaina for interment
Present family recall visiting the grave about 30 years ago, sited at a disused Chapel. No other details can be recalled.
Any leads as to disused Chapels or their burial records would be much appreciated.
Many thanks
Dave

I believe there is three cemeteries’s in Blaina, the only one that I can think of that might have had a old chapel 30 years ago being St Peters. The chapel has now been replaced with a new one. Unfortunately the cemetery has been cleared with only a few headstones remaining. Will try and find out details on the other cemetery for you.

By the way I have the Register of Burials 1829 1944 but not at home with me at the moment I will try and get it back tomorrow and check for the name you are looking for.
Cheers

Alfred

Hi Dave I think you are going to like this.

Bertram George Niner was not buried in Blaina but in Blaenau Gwent Baptist  Chapel 31st January 1943  This cemetery was  cleared of old dangerous heat stone back in 1978. I have been to this cemetery many time and I think that war grave stones were left in place so should still be there. I can visit if you like and get a pic for you if you want. Please let me know.

Cheers

Alfred

Alfred,
Oh my word, it certainly does get better ! Apologies for delay in response - work is the curse of the researching classes.
I have had to keep re-reading your posts and I think I have started to grasp it.
I had not expected an MI and especially one that revealed a family grave.
The Welsh connection was never quite clear as the Niner family are Sussex folk, who can be traced back to Devon. I did know that his wife was Welsh.
Delighted to know where "Grandad Bert" (as I have come to know him) is buried and I will pass all this info onto his Grandson.
You mention your familiarity with Blaenau Gwent Baptist  Chapel and the possibility of a photo.
Owing a pint seems cheap at a fraction of the price. I am now going to PM you, and once again, my very grateful thanks.
Dave

Hi Gower I have a small amount of burial records from Blaina Cemetery which I have checked for you but unfortunately not able to find David Waters.
