Thank you that is great news, I am going to try and look this information up now and put it in my tree.
I did not realise a Carpenter could also be a Shipwright so that has also made things clearer.

The fact I just looked this census record up from a witness on the marriage certificate, do you think this is probably my William Towns even though the date of birth is a couple of years out? Marriage cert says born 1893 and census born 1890.

the 1891/1901/1911 all give different years of birth,,,,i think this is probably the correct birth reference

It all looks very promising. You could compare his occupation in 1911 and on marriage but everything seems to fit very well.

Shipwrights were often described as carpenters  ;)
Confirmed by the 1881 census (and 1871 if I'm looking at the right entry), where John is a ship carpenter  :)
