Advice for a beginner
« on: Tuesday 17 May 11 10:38 BST (UK) »
I am just starting this side of my tree and need some advice.

I have ordered the marriage certificate to start. This is the information I have.

William Towns (Aged 27-occupation 'Hammer Man') married Nellie Watson (Aged 24) on March 7th 1920 at St Augustins church. Both parents are listed as deceased: John Towns (carpenter) and Robert Watson (Master Painter). Witnessed by Joseph Robb Herron and Nora Wallbank.

I would like to work my way back but cannot seem to find the right family on the 1911 or 1901 census at the moment.

I did look at the witnesses and find that Joseph Robb Herron was aged 9 on the 1911 census with a William Towns aged 21 and he was described as 'Brother in Law' but I cannot see how this could be. The birth date is slightly out too. If this is him then I know he was born in North Shields but cannot be sure.

Any help on this would be appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi Wilson87  :)

Brother in law also used to mean stepbrother - would that make sense?

Thanks, I did not know that.

So does that mean William Towns mother would have remarried a Herron? I don't know her maiden name yet, just presuming this is correct record but would hope to confirm.

I think William is Mary's brother.

Mary McKay Towns marries a Peter Gilmore in 1896, and a Mary Gilmore marries Joseph Herron in 1898.

In the family you were looking at (father John Towns Shipwright) there was a Mary of the right age it seems.

Free BMD has a marriage in 1896 for Mary McKay Towns to Peter Gilmore

and there is a marriage 1898 with Mary Gilmore and Joseph Herron as possible spouses  ???

William Towns has an older sister Mary - perhaps?

I agree with Tati - the brother in law describes the relationship between Joseph as the head of the house and William.

Shipwrights were often described as carpenters  ;)
