Photograph for Dating please :-)
« on: Tuesday 17 May 11 22:32 BST (UK) »
Hi! Thanks a lot in advance for this! Been going through old family photos, coming across people we don't know and they aren't named on the back and we've come across this fellow. We have been told stories of a family member, a Lee, being in the Boer War and having a good rank and highly decorated etc and this seems to fit the bill. However we know nothing of military uniform, regiments, medals anything so struggling to see if this photo is the right date!

Any info on the uniform and rank etc would be highly appreciated as well!

No info on the photographer and it is stuck onto that lovely framing card thing, which is rather thick. Not sure who did that. It's about 3 inches wide and 5/6 inches tall
Lee - Romany, gypsy, as far back as we can!

Hi Laplinp,it might be worth posting on the Armed Forces board. You will have to rename the file first.

ps.Have Lee's in my line but don't know much about them as yet, apart from they were Irish.

Oh thanks for that I will do! Didn't notice that!

Ya we don't know too much about them, just snippets. Especially since all the info my cousin gathered went missing (Long story!) But I dunno about any Irish roots. Who knows!

I think this is a photo of Field Marshal Kitchener.

Ah Flakdodger, beat me to it,the same photo is on Wikipedia.Laplinp, perhaps it was saved as one of your rellies served under him.

Woah woah woah... How did I ever miss that?! I remember the posters from history class now!!

Blimey... Ok so maybe a family member did serve under him, hence the photo amongst our collections. This I never expected haha. Would make sense as we are told a family member served in the war...

Possibly the photo was collected as a popular keepsake from the time. By no means would you be the first to have Queen Victoria's 2nd cousin lurking as your 4x great granny!
Portrait is by Bassano. National Portrait Gallery dates it as 29 July 1910.
Cheers

Given the black border I am guessing this was produced to commemorate his death aboard HMS Hampshire in 1916.
