Elizabeth Dowsett - Chelmsford and Stoke by Clare
« on: Wednesday 18 May 11 16:11 BST (UK) »
I need help as I have become stuck. I am looking for the death of a Elizabeth Dowsett. She was born on 11th January 1882 in sub district of Clare in the Counties Essex & Suffolk. The registration district was Risbridge. Her parents where George and Frances Dowsett mothers maiden name Everitt. The majority of the family had moved to Essex by 1891 Sible Hedingham and Castle Hedingham.

I have found her in both the 1891 and 1901 census
.
I thought I had found her in the 1911 census, but living in Epsom Workhouse with two children, and then found her possible her death in 1912 again in Epsom. However my Uncle who resides in the USA, recalls having a copy of her death certificate (the record was destroyed in a recent house fire) and the death was circa 1906 in Moulsham, Chelmsford. He belives that the informant was her brother Willie (William)  J Dowsett and the address was 21 George Street Moulsham Chelmsford, Elizabeth's daughter, my grandmother was born at this address. I have found Willie in the 1911 census and he lived at 14 George St Moulsham Chelmsford.
I have tried every search I can on line and found no Elizabeth Dowsett death in a relevant area. There is one in Colchester but it was not her.

My grandmother (Frances) is listed in 1911 census as living with Elizabeth parents so I have found a strong link backwards, but she told her children that her mother died when she was young and she knew of no siblings, and if it does indeed turn out to be that Elizabeth did die in Epsom, there where two siblings she never knew. The irony is that I have been able to trace a living relative of the Elizabeth who died in Epsom!

So any help to find out more would be so gratefully received to solve the mystery.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat.

If you are certain that is not her in Colchester in 1906, I would be very inclined to think that the death in Epsom is the correct one for 3 reasons.

1. There is no other death of the right age anywhere after 1901. If she was born 1882, that fits exactly.

2. The Elizabeth Dowsett in Epsom in 1911 gives her place of birth as Stoke by Clare, which fits with the 1901. Not very likely there
was another Elizabeth Dowsett of the correct age and POB. She was also a servant.

3. There are only 5  Elizabeth Dowsetts in 1911, the other 4 are married.

The way to check would be to send for the death certificate, although it may not help if the death was registered by someone who didn't know her that well.

Added: I see from your other post that you already have the certificate

As you say that her son was sent to live with relatives in Essex after her death, I would say that is another reason to think this is the correct person.

Hi,

Your post caught my eye as my wife's great grandmother was a Dowsett from Sible Hedingham.

I have looked on the 1891,1901 & 1911 census reports but cannot see your Elizabeth in 1891,

in 1901 it appears she was in service at Falcon House Castle Hedingham with her parents living elsewhere in Castle Hedingham.

The only Elizabeth Dowsett I can find in 1891 was one born 1884 in Stoke by Clare living with parents William and Lydia in Shoreditch. Is this a red herring or does it muddy the waters further?

Hi Essex Poet, I was having trouble with 1882 Elizabeth in 1891, but if you agree the 1901 is the correct 1882 Elizabeth, then the 1884 Elizabeth is still with her parents William and Lydia, shown on transcription as Lillie Dousett on FindMyPast Census ref RG!3/270/138/22

I had already found her in 1891 the census recorded the family as Dawsett. The family was still living in Stoke by Clare, Stonards Road. I only found them by doing an address search. A mistake in the spelling of the surname happened in 1881 as well, this time its spelt Dousett, and the family consist of Geroge and Hannah, with a new born boy - William

I should have know to look for alternative spelling -  have even seen it as Dorset.

Seems strange that there should have been 2 Elizabeths born within a year or so of each other in such a small village - but maybe not - the same forenames do seem to crop up for nephews and nieces quite frequently.

Thank you Judy and Keyboard86 for clarifying
