The Golding Family
« on: Wednesday 18 May 11 18:37 BST (UK) »
I have tried for quite a few years to find where in Ireland my gt.gt. grandfather and family are from.
His name is John Golding born abt 1806 and his wife is Esther (dont know maiden name her age varies in all the census) listed on every census as coming from 'Ireland' also his daughter Catherine and son Thomas.  However, I have noticed that on the 1901 census Thomas is listed as coming from Mayo Ireland, but cant find any further information.
I think they must have come to Liverpool sometime before 1851. Thomas is aged 12 then and Catherine is 7.
There are so many places in Mayo, I just don't know where to start. Can anyone help?
Many thanks
Cecile

Unfortunatly you would need a bit more detail about the location to start a search. There are quite a number of parishes in Co. Mayo to search though and 1806 is before the start of the records for many areas.

Do you know the family religion ?

Hi Shane
I am afraid I don't know exactly where they are from.  On the 1891 census (I thought it was 1901 but it isn't) in states that Thomas Golding is from Mayo Ireland and that is as much as I know. Both he and his father John are listed as Dock Labourers in Liverpool.  I have no idea when his parents died or when they were married - obviously married in Ireland.

I am 99% sure that they were Protestants and as far as I know, they only had the two children - Thomas and Catherine.

Not a great deal of help am I?
Many thanks
Cecile

The term Protestant includes a number of denominations, but I'd guess probably Anglican - i.e. Church of England / Church of Ireland

Early CofI records are patchy in Co Mayo - there are some parishes that have records back as far as the children's baptisms (c1844, c1839).

There are a couple of baptism listing for the names Catherine and Thomas with some variation in the surname (i.e. Golden, Goldin etc) shown around the right time on the index of RootsIreland (pay-website), but unfortunately these do not show a match for a father's name of John.

Thank you for that information.

I know there are different way of spelling Golding.  On different things I have come across it has been 'Goulding' or Golden. I suppose years ago, they spelt it as it sounded to them at the time (makes it difficult for us to-day though).

Many thanks for trying.

Hello again

I have recently found out that son Thomas Golding was born in Killala County Mayo. He was born about 1841. I assume that the family must have lived there. They are in Liverpool in 1851 so sometime during those ten years they left Ireland. I am not sure how to find out more info.  Is there census info available does anyone know and if so, how do I get it?  I would also love to know Esther's maiden name. I don't know if they were married there or not.  Lots of ifs and buts.

Hi Cecile,

unfortunately it looks as though it is all a bit too early, for example, this show the records in the Family Search catalogue.

Killala records

You could also look here http://www.mayo.irishroots.net/
but again your people's records are very early.  This site is quite expensive to download anything so you would have to be sure.

best wishes
