Looking for any information regarding John Curran born about 1799 in the Derry area of Ireland, I think.  He later came over to Scotland and at some stage changed his name to Corns, he married Agnes McGregor born in Glasgow approx 1811.  He died about 1863 in Scotland. Not sure if name change was before or after his marriage.  Any help would be appreciated

Hi,
John was born long before Civil Registration started in Ireland. You will have to depend on church records, where these exist, and for those you need to know his religion and an accurate location for his birth at least parish if not townland.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, I don't have any other information, so it may be as far as I can go with his side of the family

Hi Marmyall,

I am just wondering if you ever found out anymore information about John Curran? You mentioned in one of your posts that he was probably originally from Derry; what makes you think that he came from there?

I have Curran ancestors from county Derry and am interested to know more about your relation, just in case there is a connection with my own family; as there were only a small number of families with the surname 'Curran' in county Derry in the early to mid 1800s.
On the 1831 census for county Derry there are only 13 families recorded on it with the name Curran (or variations of that name); and most of these families were living fairly close to each other. On the later Griffith's Valuation of 1858 there are 22 families called Curran recorded.

Interestingly, you said that John's surname was sometimes recorded as 'Corns'. I have also come across records for my own family that have the surname written as 'Corn' or 'Carn'; I have only recently heard some Derry people pronounce the name 'Curran' and the way they said makes it sounds like the letter 'A' doesn't exist!!!

I look forward to your reply.
Best wishes,
Brendan

Hi Brendan

The only information I have regarding John Curran, my 3 x great grandfather, is that he was born about 1799 in Derry I think, he came to Scotland in the early 1800's and married Agnes McGregor who was born about 1811 in Glasgow.  I have his death as about 1863 but that is to be confirmed.  One of their children is Alexander Corns, my 2 x great grandfather, born about 1840 in Glasgow, married Mary Baird in Glasgow in 1863,  his death is listed as 1923 in Buckhaven, Fife, Scotland.  One of their children is Charles Corns, my great grandfather, born in Slamamman in 1874,  and he married Mary Selfridge born in Shotts in 1876.  So far I haven't been able to find out when or why John Curran/s came to Scotland and if the name change was a spelling mistake or intentional.  I've not done any checks on the Corns tree for a while, so the information I have regarding John Curran is limited.  I hope what I've written here is of help to you and look forward to hearing from you in due course.

Marmyall

hi

I stumbled upon your post while searching my family tree ' Corns' . It would seem we have the same great grandad in Charles Corns. His son Henry ( Harry)  is my grandad. Do you have any photos of Charles? We have a photo of him (Charlie), his wife Mary ,his sisters  Maggie and Mary and her husband Jock Beveridge ) Also in the picture are Mary and Jocks  daughter in law, Annie and her son Sandy, and  Annie's sister Lizzie Gillon - I think that's right though not 100% certain. There are two other children in the photo but we don't know who they are. If you want a copy I can send you a scanned version. Do you have any photos you would like to share?

Hope to hear back from you.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, I would love to have copies of any of the old photos you may have, unfortunately the only ones I have are of my grandparents, Charles Corns & Marion Ross and some of their family.  If you would like to give me your direct email address I can scan some I think you may be interested in and send them direct.  My Corns/Ross family tree is also available to view on Ancestry.co.uk if you wish to take a look.  My email address is Myallmar@aol.com
