1920 Schleswig Medal
« on: Friday 20 May 11 11:41 BST (UK) »
I am seeking information on the 1920 Schleswig Medal. I have written to Portsmouth at the HM Naval Base and they say that they do not have a list of recipients for the medal. I know that my great uncle William Joseph Morgan, born 1880 at Warrenpoint Co. Down Ireland, was in the Navy from 1899 until 1921/1922, but I do not know whether or the medal was presented to him.

The story goes that a British ship was involved in rescuing some refugees in Denmark and that the medal was presented by King Christian, King of Denmark, but I would like to know if there is a list of recipients. Apparently only 550 such medals were issued.

Does anyone know any records, Danish or English, that could help? The National Archives at Kew and HM Naval Base have been unable to help so far so perhaps the answer lies in Danish records?

Matt

 - this has a note that:
Quote
The Slesvig Medal was given to all ranks of the Allied Forces (The
1st Bn, Sherwood Foresters and the 22nd Bn, Chasseurs Alpin)
which occupied the Duchy of Slesvig during the 1920 Plebiscite,
which saw the northern half of Slesvig returned to Denmark

Does his service record not say what ship he was serving on around 1919-1921?

 - someone here lists the British ships involved as:
H.M.S. Carysport  (think this is actually the Carysfort)
H.M.S. Seawolf
H.M.S. Sesame
H.M. Tug St. Anne

You could always email the Danish National Archives, they might be able to point you in the right direction:
