Suicide of Robert Algeo in Devon
« on: Saturday 21 May 11 00:59 BST (UK) »
A man named Robert Newcomen Algeo committed suicide in Plymouth Devon on January 16, 1849.  the London Times article mentioned that he had friends in York, and was of good family.  I was wondering if there was any mention of his death in a contemporaneous York newspaper (the Yorkshire Post?)

Hi can't find anything in yorkshire papers but it is mentioned in 'trewmans exeter flying post', same article in liverpool mercury.
The Times (Tues. 16 Jan.) also has a detailed inquest online.

Thank you for this -- I have read the Times piece, but was wondering if the either of the other papers give any info about who his friends or family might be.  I am especially interested now you mention the Liverpool paper as there is an Eliza Algeo living there in 1851 census, widow, milliner, born in Ireland, with a daughter who would be the right age to be this man's daughter, and I have wondered about whether Eliza was in fact Robert Algeo's widow.    How are you accessing the paper?  Is it available online somewhere?

Hi,
Several addresses for the insolvent debtor Robert Algeo here in 1832, but no York connection: http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/18943/pages/1343 (first column)
Regards
Rob

Hi I joined the Lancashire County library online which gave me access to the newspapers, free and anyone can join.

Have also found a marriage of a Robert Newcomen Algeo 26 clerk, to a Isabella Forsyth 26 ,22 Apr. 1872 Walton Breck Holy Trinity, Liverpool. Grooms father Robert Newcomen Algeo (farmer) deceased, brides father William Forsyth licensed victualler deceased. Both residing 107 Boundary Lane Everton. Witnesses Alex Francis Rowaleski and Emily Gyles. His son maybe?

There is also a marriage of a Robert Newcomen Algeo of St. Mary Dover ,widow, to Margaret Kersteman of the same parish, widow. 17 Feb. 1829.

I'll keep looking for more, British Library newspapers are online you may have to subscribe.

I think it may be his son -- or possibly grandson.

Thanks for the tip about British Library newspapers -- I did subscribe and was well rewarded, but did not find the Liverpool paper on line.    Do you still have access to it?

Thanks for all your help!

Santa T.

The british Library newspapers have the Liverpool Mercury from 1811-1900 online, you should be able to access them, if you can't I'll have a look for you.

Thanks, I did find it and was able to search using advanced search, but no joy.  Anyway, if it was same as in the other paper, probably not point looking further, as that little piece only references "friends in York" and gives no hint of survivors.
