SS Earnholm 1875 death Dugald Paterson
« on: Saturday 21 May 11 19:10 BST (UK) »
On Scotland's People, the Marine Register for 1875 shows that Dugald Paterson, Chief Engineer, age 27 died in an accident aboard the SS Earnholm.  Where can I learn more about his death?

Black's guide to Ireland for 1902 shows "S.S. EARNHOLM leaves Leith every Monday, and Aberdeen every Tuesday, for Buckie, Lossiemouth, Cromarty, Invergordon, ami Inverness: leaves Inverness every Thursday for Cromarty, Invergordon, Aberdeen, and Leith."   I also found that the SS Earnholm sank off Invergordon in 1911 or 1912.

hi just wondering if this could be be connected to dugalds death from the glasgow herald thursday november 11th 1875 collission in the river - yesterday afternoon a collision took place near the point house wharf govan between the screw-steamers tern and earnholm. the earnholm was steaming down the clyde and the tern was on her way to the broomielaw, the bow of the tern struck the earnholm on the port side and cut her down to the water edge and she was towed towards the wharf where she now lies. the other vessel proceeded on her course, the police are making an investigation into the case.         the earnholm seems to have been sailing regulary in 1875  between glasgow limerick galway

Thank you for the reply.  The Marine Register shows that he died on 26 June 1875 and the record of his death was registered 11 August 1875.  I don't think the two events are connected because the collision ocurred in November of 1875.

Thanks for checking the newspapers.  I'm thinking there must be some account of the accident recorded in the maritime bureaucracy such as a board of inquiry or court of admiralty, but I'm a Texan and I don't know which authority would maintain the records of fatal accidents in the British maritime industry.

Here in the US we have things like the Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA) and there is also the possibility of a suit for damages in a case of wrongful death.  Do any readers have a suggestion to make?

The death was registered in Limerick district not Co. Galway.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
