Any ideas of Regiments Please
« on: Monday 23 May 11 21:23 BST (UK) »
Hi All.

I acquired these postcards at Market Harborough the
other week.

I wondered if anyone could glean which regiments at all please.

Hi Sandy

The second photograph is easier to identify. The young mens' cap badge looks like that of the Leicestershire Regiment. They had a Young Soldiers Battalion attached from 1917.

The officer's cap badge is harder to spot. It is easier to date the photograph as he is wearing overseas service chevrons on his right cuff. These were introduced in 1918. On his left cuff are three wound stripes (1916). The single medal ribbon is probably the 1914 or 1914-15 Star. If the former he would not have received the ribbon until almost the end of 1918. If the latter by the end of 1919. He hasn't received the ribbons for the British War medal and Victory Medal yet. So it was probably taken 1919 to 1921. Officer had to apply for their medals - which led to delays - so it could even be 1922.

Black buttons tend to suggest Rifle Brigade or Kings Royal Rifle Corps
Very young lads must be  a Young Soldiers Battalion
Poss 53rd YS Batt it had Northants connections

Ady
Lowe(Lower Gornall-Castleford)
Blackburn (Castleford)
Sidwell(Ledsham)
Fairburn(Hartshead)
Wood(Liversedge)
Tallon (Whittington Lancs/Hartshead West Yorkshire)

Researching all Great War soldiers from the Spen Valley of West Yorkshire Especially lads from the Cleckheaton Company of 1/4th West Riding Regiment.

Hi Ken and Ady.

Thank you for the information which is extremely welcome
for me having no knowledge about the regiments.

I was trying to link them to the Regiment then offer the postcards
to anyone researching the Regiments (unless Northants  :))

Much appreciated both of you.

Sandy

Hi

The Officer with the Leicestershire Regt. is wearing the General Service Corps
Cap Badge.

Actually it's The General List mate, for officers not attached to particular Regts or Corps....

I'm wondering if these are a school OTC....

Oakham School certainly wore the Leicester badge...Laurel wreath on the "Hindoostan" scroll and Oakham School OTC  on the Leicestershire scroll....

Call this chap, I think he'll be interested...The OC of the Army Cadets at Oakham School....Contingent Commander Maj David M Taylor  01572 758748

Oh and of course...Oakham to Harborough isnt far!!!
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.
