coyle/freel/roughpark/1847
« on: Wednesday 25 May 11 18:06 BST (UK) »
Hello there
This appears to be a mission impossible due to such an early date 1847.Could someone be kind enough to advise me where roughpark is in donegal. My gt grandmother was marjory coyle born in roughpark in 1847 to a hugh coyle and a rossana coyle maiden name (freel).Marjory left donegal at an early age and settled in glasgow , i dont think that her parents went with her.The area that she settled in was kinning park and marlow st and stockwell st and king st in the city.At the age of 19 years she  got married to a patrick  flannagan aged 23 years who originated from armagh they married in the roman catholic cathedral in gt clyde st glasgow in january 1866.I would dearly love to find something out about this area called roughpark in donegal.and in particular any reference to my ancestors i.e. what did they do in donegal did they have any other children? .there is an old story in the family that in 1847 marjory went into the workhouse as a baby .surely that cant be possible? however we all know how this old family stories perptuate. If you could throw any light on this subject i would be delighted to hear from you or if you have a family connection to my coyles or freels i would love to hear from you. kind regards Hartley James Connelly.

See http://hiflyte.22web.net/iredata/donegal_data/Griff_Val/gv_by_parish/a_to_c_parishes/aughnish.htm

For maps. It is in the Parish of Aughnish.

Good place to start: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~donegal/aughnishproj.htm

Read up how to use Parish data etc in the Irish resources section of Rootschat

Roughpark is a townland in the Parish of Aghanunshin, Donegal near Letterkenny, checked 1857 Griffith don't see any Coyles/Freels living there at that time

Hi Joemc
Thanks so much for that response re roughpark in donegal.Sadly i am more confused than ever as now i understand there are two places of the same name and the same location in donegal,I wonder which one is mine ,i know that the birth date for marjory coyle is correct as it is 1847 and it is roughpark if only i knew which one ,However in the meantime my genuine and grateful thanks and hopefully some further information will surface.
   thankyou thankyou, Ballymacnab.

Looking at the 1857 Griffith information and Tithe records, I would say that Roughpark in Aughnish the one that Postmagic posted is the one your looking for, I see 15 Coyles in the Parish in 1857, 3 living in Roughpark, I couldn't find any yesterday for the Roughpark in Aghanunshin, there are also Friels in that Parish also.

Hi Joe, don't worry too much about the two townlands, that happens all the time in Irish research. If we could back track a little, could you tell us how you got your Coyle/Friel details?

Was it from someone in your family or a cert or census of some kind?

The way to work this out is by means of Mary Coyle's birth or baptism cert, I think,
and as she was born after births had to be registered in Ireland, unless you are very unlucky, there should be a registration. The cert will tell us which parish she was born in, and may give other to help us dig further.

If You do have it already, could you copy the details, church married in, parish, registration district, witnesses etc, as these will all give clues to Roughpark. Any Coyle/Friel info you have could help - did the family leave Ireland?

Hello P.M.
Firstly let me thank you for you response it is i assure you appreciated as this is a difficult one. What i do know as fact   i have my gt grandmothers Marjorie coyles marriage register certificate is that she was married  on the 8th of january 1866 at the roman catholic cathedral in gt clyde st  glasgow at the age of 19 years to a pATRICK O'Flannagan who was 23 years of age who came from armagh.I do not know if marjorie coyles parents left donegal  with her to come to glasgow with her. This period of her birth was a very traumatic time as she was born in the middle of the famine period. The reason why i know marjorie coyle was born in a place called roughpark in donegal is that on the 5th/07/1907 marjorie applied for parish poor relief in glasgow and she told the assistant inspector for poor relief that she was 58 years old and that she had no means and that she was the daughter of hugh coyle  a drain maker (whatever that is ) and her mother was rossana freel from donegal. the inspector wrote down  rushpark donegal however as there is no rushpark in donegal he missunderstood her and what she really said was roughpark donegal as being her place of birth, That still leaves me with the problem as to where she was born. There is a (hugh coyle) living in rathmelton in church st aughnish 64 kilmacrenan donegal  in the griffith valuation .  and the immediate lessor is a mary coyle . i have a hunch that this may be  my gt grandmothers marjorie coyles father (Hugh Coyle). It would be wonderful if i could establish that .In the meant that?.thanks so much, ballymacnab
