Kelso or Roxburghshire Directory?
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 18:55 BST (UK) »
Some years ago I accessed a Scottish site while looking for information about Makerstoun and Mertoun. I think the pages were filmed from a book (or Directory) because the print was old fashioned.  Can anyone recognise this site please?
My present interest is in old Kelso.
Thank you.

Hi
I don't know of the site you are enquiring about, but Google Books has a full view of the New Statistical Account of Scotland Volume V which includes Roxburghshire, and gives information about each parish as it was in 1834.

Rutherfurd's Southern Counties Register and Directory was published in 1866 and gives the names of individuals as well as general information. (I have it, if there is something specific you wish to look up.)

Thank you for the information and offer.
I just wanted the page(s)  to add interst to my research file.  The print was attractive!

I will check with the 2 sources you have given me.
Thank you again.

Hi Lesley

I have just come across your posting and note that you say you have the 'Rutherfurd's Southern Counties Register and Directory' published in 1866. I was wondering if you did not mind me asking if you would be kind to look up an entry for James Rae (tobacco and snuffer manufacturer) and let me know what the actual entry says and if it mentions anything else about him. If you need more info on him, please let me know.

Many many thanks.

Zoe

Hi Zoe

(The previous answer was not by me!)

Rutherford's Directory is not indexed, so I would need to know what town or village James Rae lived in, as that is the way it is organised.
The Directory is basically just a list- the most you can hope for is a street address if James Rae lives in one of the larger towns.

Sorry Lesley - I read the message and assumed it was in reply to my one (did not notice who sent it).

James Rae stayed at 45 High Street, Lauder, Berwickshire.

The listing just says:
'James Rae, tobacco and snuff manufacturer'.

The list has two different symbols after some of the names, indicating that they were entitled to vote either for the county (of Berwickshire) or the burgh (of Lauder), but James Rae has neither.
