Patterson & Thomson
« on: Thursday 26 May 11 22:42 BST (UK) »
Hi ;)

I am looking for a record of the birth and families of James Patterson and Violet Thomson.  They were married July 25, 1819 in Wilton or Kirktown, Roxburgh, Scotland (I don't know how close these places are to one another but according to two records it gives two different places in Roxburgh.  They had a son, William, who was born about 1830 in Scotiland. He later moved to Canada.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Jan

At least one of the dates you have for Violet and James is likely to be the banns to the marriage. Banns were normally read in the parishes of the bride and groom which is likely why Wilton and Kirktown are mentioned.

Wilton and Kirktown are both parishes within Roxburghshire. Have a look at this parish map to help you get your bearings www.scotlandsfamily.com/parish-map-borders.htm

Likely you have details from IGI of William's marriage in 1868 in Grey Ontario that shows as actual extract from records. There is also a potential brother showing on IGI for William, a Robert chr. on 27 Aug. 1820 in Kirktown.

This brother Robert also looks to have married a Christina Gillean in Grey Ontario, at the age of 45, in 1872 (age doesn't quite fit, does it, an 1819/20 birth!).  Showing as born in Wilton,ROX. to parents as you have.

Possible census entry from 1841 here www.maxwellancestry.com/census/41transcript.aspx?houseid=81003041

Wondering where William born circa 1830 could be  :-\ He may well already be working away from home perhaps.

There is a Violet Thomson born/bapt to Robert Thomson and Margaret Lockie on the old parish records - this was at Cavers, Roxburghshire 25/5/1795  Violet was not such a common name around the Borders and Cavers is near to the two parishes you name.

This one is very likely to be yours.  First daughter named after mother's mother and second son named after mother's father.  Fits with what Monica found for you as William is not living there.  You can do the same to give you a guide as to what James' parents names would be.  A much more common name!
