Jewish Ancestors-Scotland - HELP !
« on: Friday 27 May 11 07:51 BST (UK) »
After researching my English ancestors for several years, my wife and I have decided to try and trace her ancestors who were Jewish but seemingly went to Scotland in the 19th or early 20th century.  We would love to be able to tell our descendants about where their mother's ancestors really came from and when.
Sadly my wife's father was unknown. We have traced her mother and have got as far as a marriage certificate for her mother's parents who of course were my wife's grandparents.  Details on that are as follows;-
Lewis Fisher, picture frame maker, d of b about 1879.  His father was Isaac Fisher, cutlery traveller, d of b unknown, Isaac's wife was Leah Fisher whose maiden name was Blas.
Tine Asher, bride of Lewis, tailoress, d of b about 1878.  Her father was Jacob Asher, Teacher of Hebrew, d of b unknown, his wife was Annie Asher whose maiden name was Oserovitz,  d of b unknown.
All the above lived in Glasgow, married certificate dated Dec 1  1901 at Gorbals,  Glasgow.
We have purchased credits with Scotlands People and have only had luck with a marriage. (details given)
If anyone can help we shall be very grateful.
Many thanks,

Arty ???

Suggest you contact the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre in Glasgow, if you have not already done so.

Hi

Have you looked at the censuses?

On the 1911 Census there is a Louis Fisher, 30, joiner, boarding at 335 Govan Street, Glasgow. He is down as being born in Russia.

Could this be the Lewis?

I see that a Louis Fisher, 30 and wife Tine are at 9 Warwick Street, Gorbals in 1911. They are both 30 and both born Russsia but Louis is now an Assistant Horse Dealer. *

Very many thanks to you Margow and yourself 'gnu'for the very quick replies !  Much appreciated.

Will have a look at the Scottish Jewish Archives Margow, sounds great, didn't even know about the sight !

Thankyou gnu !  Yes, the Lewis with the 3 youngsters on the 1911 census is the one alright.  I'll have a look at the actual census myself now I know it's there. Never  thought about that one !
At least now we know that there is Russian descent.

Many thanks again,

Cheers,    Arty 8)

I think that this might be Louis's relatives (brother and mother, poss)  and it looks as if they came over after 1889:

1901
50 Crown Street, Govan

Israel Fisher, 23, tailor, b. Russia, foreign subject
Sarah, 23, b. -do-
Samuel, 5, b. -do-
Beckie, 2, b.  -do-
Leah, 62, mother,  b.  -do-
Fanny Hedstsbenick(?), visitor32, tailoress, b. -do-

I don't see a death reg for Leah - using various search criteria  :(

Remember that 'Russian' at certain periods could cover countries such as Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, etc.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

HI Arty

I've just found Louis's death in 1944. By then he was a furniture remover. Tine is written as Christina Asher and is still alive. A Jean Fisher, daughter, was the informant.  Will send.

Parents names are the same. I can't seem to find a death for Leah. Did the marriage cert have them as deceased?
