Carting Contractor
« on: Wednesday 27 April 05 17:04 BST (UK) »
Any idea what a carting contractor is? In the 1901 census i have my person down as a boatman, but by 1940 he was deceased but named on his sons marriage certificate as a carting contractor, are they related or have i got the wrong person on the census!

Thanks
Samantha

Hi Samantha, if you have 39 years between 1901 and the marriage in 1940 i'd say it was entirely possible for someone to change their occupation.
As a Carting Contractor he would have delivered or collected goods for people.
