Newspaper look up Sinking of Yacht 'Nymph' off Selsey 1905
« on: Wednesday 01 June 11 13:30 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Looking for any information that may be in Records Office in Chicester, on incident in March 1905, if anyone happens to be going there.

My Great x2 Uncle appears to have been on a Yacht lost off Selsey.

"Drowned whilst serving on yacht 'Nymph' which is supposed to have been lost off Selsey on or about 26th March 1905"

The above information is taken from Royal Naval Reserve Record, report was dated 12/4/05.

I cannot seem to find a death certificate for him either?.

Regards

Kliffy

The Nymph was once owned by H W Harris, but you gave no name to your great x 2 uncle whose death you cannot find?    Roy G

Thanks for the reply,

I don't know if he may have been mentioned by name, if there was a newspaper article/report.

His name Robert Henry Wilkinson, aged 43. He had served in RNR for 18 years, and lived in Portsmouth.

When I found his family on the 1911 census, and saw his wife was a widow, I tried looking for his death cert, but no joy, and now with this new information it does not seem to have changed.

From his RNR record, I know he had taken part in the Americas Cup in 1903, being the part of the crew of Shamrock I, so it may well have been the Yacht you mention, but is does seem to be a popular name.

I had a look outside the box so to speak and also drew a blank.  He may have gone down with the yacht and the body was not recovered, or tides took his corpse to France and he appears in their listings.   Perhaps as far as the UK was concerned, with no actual body, he was just missing, presumed drowned.  Roy G
