thomas shaw Mystery
« on: Thursday 02 June 11 21:33 BST (UK) »
I’m looking for any information regarding a Thomas Shaw born in 1821 in the 1840 census he’s a publican of what I think is the Heathcoat arms in Fenton with his wife Mary Shaw and children Richard Shaw and Samuel Shaw , but the census after that he disappears so does Mary . Richard and Samuel are in spittals workhouse. Thomas then reappears in the 1861 census in Stafford prison. Has anyone got any ideas whats happened or where I can look, thanks .

You might also find that Staffordshire Record Office have records from Stafford Jail - giving details of sentence etc.  Once you have worked out when Thomas entered prison, you might be able to check local newspapers for details of the trial etc.

Also, Ancestry have criminal registers on line - I had a quick look and there are a few Thomas Shaws knocking about  in Staffordshire, but as yet I haven't seen one who I think is definitely yours!

Are you sure that the Thomas in 1861 is the same as the one on the 1841?  He is listed as still being married, suggesting if he is the right chap that Mary is still alive somewhere.

staffordshire archives have some of their records online, and available for download.  These include some of the trial transcripts.  I think this is the record for the Thomas Shaw in prison on the 1861 census http://www.staffsnameindexes.org.uk/StartPage.aspx?Mode=Transcript&RecordID=13741&Surname=Shaw&Loc=&Fix=1&FromDate=1841&ToDate=1861&Index=A&PageID=4&RecordCount=60
