Ransom/Packham
« on: Friday 03 June 11 01:10 BST (UK) »
Hello all,
in February 2010 I posted a query, I now have more accurate information  ;)
Link to previous post

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,437739.0.html

I am now looking for 2 things:

A marriage for Hannah RANSOM and Samuel PACKHAM in Sussex 1833 in Northiam Sussex
Hannah's parents were Henry RANSOM and Mary Elizabeth LEONARD
Samuel's parents were Samuel PACKHAM and Elizabeth SIMMONDS or MASTERS { she may have been married previously}- This is what I am trying to find out.
I thought if I can obtain a Marriage certificate it would have their parents names on it. Would this be correct ?

I am still looking for the man named on Hannah's daughter's { Mary Angel { RANSOM } CHANDLER'S death certificate  Sydney Australia 1896}as her father : Rugby CHISHOLM - Surgeon.
I can find nothing on this man at all apart from a piece of land being owned by a Dr CHISHOLM in the town where Hannah and Mary settled in New South Wales. I can find no Census, birth, marriage, death or immigration details at all. A very elusive man  :P

Samuel PACKHAM had a sister Ellis PACKHAM who married Thomas SARGENT in 1825 in Northiam Sussex before also emigrating to New South Wales. If I can't find Hannah and Samuel's marriage I could try for that marriage if it would list her parents.

Samuel and Ellis had 6 other siblings born between 1801 and 1818 siblings.

Thank you in advance.

regards
Alison

Hello Alison

Marriages before Registration began the 3rd q of 1837 did`nt include Fathers name. Then it would not have Mothers name only Fathers in England.

On the SMI there are only 3 Samuel Packham marriages.

20 April 1803 Rotherfield
Samuel Packham & Sarah Killick

20 May 1818 at Hailsham
Samuel Packham & Elizabeth Crowhurst

23 Feb 1833 Northiam
Samuel Packham & Hannah Ransom

27th May 1800 Bexhill
Henry Ranson a Bach from Hastings St Clements &
Mary Leonard

25 July 1825 Northiam
Thomas Sargent & Alice Packham

Hope this helps
Kind Regards

There are quite a few Packhams and Ransoms still in the Northiam area in the 1841 and 51 census so it might be worth tracing them back to see if they connect up.   Some might have married after 1837.
It might be worth searching the Northiam parish register film at your nearest LDS centre to see who the witnesses were for the marriages and if there are extra snippets.
Very few Chisholm entries on the SMI so obviously not a Sussex name.

Hi Alison,

I have just had another look at marriages on the SMI and there is a marriage of a Samuel Peckham and Elizabeth Masters on 25.02.1805 at Beckley. Unfortunately it does not say whether or not Elizabeth was a widow. There was also a marriage of an Elizabeth Simmons to a William Masters on 08.07.1894 at Udimore.  There is a burial of a William Masters at Burwash on 12.01.1804, though he was aged 66years which would have made him considerably older than Elizabeth, if these two William Masters are the same person. An Elizabeth Simmons was baptised at Udimore  on 29.11.1776, daughter of Robert and Mary.

I hope this may help you to unravel a little bit more.

Regards,
Lesley

Thank you Omega:
On the marriage of Henry RANSON and Mary LEONARD- what is " a Bach" ?

Thank you silligen:
This " Rugby" CHISHOLM is really proving to be an elusive chap.
I will check the Census'  ;)

Thank you Lesley:
These are definitely the people the family is having difficulty with  ;)

How do I go about getting copies of these certificates ?
Can anyone tell me all the information that would be on them ?
Are the Parish register films at LDS complete copies of what is on the register and therefore the Certificates ?

Thank you all so much for your efforts  ;D

Prior to 1837 there aren't any certificates.    The entry in the church register is all you can get and the LDS films generally show the whole register  including baptisms and burials in most cases so that you can see a much wider picture of the family.  Often there are extra snippets such as an address or "5th child of x and y".  Marriages show the names of the people concerned and witnesses.  Prior to 1837 the address is usually minimal - just of the parish.  You can only get copies from the local archive office or by getting the film to search for yourself, though some areas are now online too.
After 1837 all church and civil entries show the father of both bride and groom plus occupations and address.
Bach is bachelor.
