Help Please
« on: Saturday 04 June 11 00:50 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I am looking for a Thomas Shemmans or Sheman born around 1818 in Stockingford, Warwickshire, I have no idea who his parents were as I have tried the IGI with no success, he may have been married there as well but all I have on his wife is that her name was Sarah.

Their names come up on Ancestry.co.uk with their family but no surname for the wife.

Any help would be appreciated.

Best regards.

Archie.

You haven't given any details of when their first child was born as this helps determine a likely marriage date

1851 indexed as Shermman and eldest child aged 12 b Staffs - as was his wife

There is a marriage for a Thomas Shemmans Dec 1/4 1838 vol 18/744 West Bromwich. On the same page is a Sarah Hawkins.
One of their children's birth certs would give you her maiden name.

Hi Archie.

Crisane's entry looks like a good possibility - but you would need to check the occupations etc on the original certificate to be sure.

From www.freebmd.org.uk
SHEMMANS Thomas and HAWKINS Sarah (amongst others on page)
Dec Quarter 1938 West Bromwich  18 744

Or at www.westmidlandsbmd.org.uk
West Midlands Marriage indexes for the years: 1838
SHEMMANS Thomas and HAWKINS Sarah
Wednesbury, St Bartholomew (Sandwell Register Office REF NO 32/1/66)

It is a bit odd - as there is also a parish record at www.familysearch.org which has their marriage in Rugeley, Staffordshire in May 1838

Groom's Name: Thomas Shemmans
Bride's Name: Sarah Hawkins

Marriage Date: 20 May 1838
Marriage Place: Rugeley, Stafford, England

Milly
McBride (Monaghan, Manchester), Derbyshire (Bollington,Cheshire), Knight (Newcastle,Staffs), Smith (Chorley, Lancs & Ireland), Tipladay (Manchester & Yorkshire) ,Steadman (Madeley,Shropshire), Steele (Manchester,Glasgow), Parkinson (Wigan, Lancashire), Lovatt, Cornes & Turner (Staffs) Stott (Oldham, Lancs). All ended up Ardwick, Manchester

Ah - I see from Carol's 1851 entry that Sarah is born Rugeley so that makes sense.
And a 1838 birth for eldest child being 12 (born about 1839) fits too

I wonder why the official marriage entry is later in the year?

Hi Folks,

WOW,  a great big big thanks to you all for searching it is really fantastic just to get Sarah's maiden name, their eldest child as far as I can find was William born on or around 1841 at Rugeley, Staffordshire, they all eventually end up in Walsall.

Down the line one member of the family eventually ended up at Gretna got married and settled down there to have her family, two daughters and a son the son now being in America one daughter was in Edinburgh and now in Gretna and the other daughter lives in Livingston West Lothian Scotland, all fantastic stuff.

Best regards.

Archie.

Unless you have reason to think Edward is not Thomas and Sarah's child - I think you need to go a bit further back for the first child...if you look at the 1841 Census you will see Edward aged 2 (born about 1839  after their marriage in 1838) and William aged 2 months (early 1841)

And in 1851 ...

1851 indexed as Shermman and eldest child aged 12 b Staffs - as was his wife

Edward 12
William 10
James 7
Eliza 3
