Two possible marriages.

Christina Oleson born 1867 Norway married June 1895 in Stephenson, Menominee, Michigan to  Martin Gulbrandson.  Her parents are shown as (just) Oleson and Eli Christianson.  There are three sources given and the transcriptions are all over the map with the spelling of the grooms last name.  Found at www.familysearch.com.  If this is Eli's daughter Kristiana then it would seem most of the "kids" made the treck over as well.

Also in Marinette, Wisconsin (Eli's stated destination on immigration) there is a marriage of an Ellin Christianson  to a Bryant Anderson on July 11, 1884.  That's all the information given ..... so that and $8.00 will get you a cup of coffee at Starbucks  ;D.  Just thought I would mention it.

I am again lost for words!

"My" Christiane Olsdatter was born July 2, as #151 here:

 http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?idx_kildeid=8865&idx_id=8865&uid=ny&idx_side=-7

..and I think she emigrated here Aug 17, 1893:

http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=21&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=98237&merk=98237#ovre

Her father was Ole Nilsen Mellem-Stæringen, he vanished from the surface of the earth in 1873, that's when his wife Eli's real problems started.

Ok I've now proven the dates listed from the Cemetery must be burial dates

The indexed record of Ella's death is found recorded as:

Ella Holsten
Birth Date: 20 Jan 1996
Death Date: 12 Apr 1980
Place of Death: Stephenson, Menominee, Michigan

While the cemetery has the date of:

HOLSTEN, ELLA    Apr-23-1980

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks a lot - again!

I have however another "straw I am grasping at":

The attached picture is taken in a Lillestrøm-Garden some time in the 1930's,

The one to the right is my grandmother, but who might the other two be?

I know that Eli Kristiansd. Anderson's daughter Maren (b. 14.05.1857) lived in Lillestrøm, she was married to Arne Martinsen and had at least 8 known children in the period 1878-99.

Worth a try....

Hi Jan

It's a lovely photo!  I think your clues for this one will have to come from what you already know.   If you look at the list of Eli's children:

Kristian 1855 -  Came to the US
Maren 1857
Nils 1859
Ragnhild b & died 1861
Ole 1862...! - Came to the US
Ragnhild 1865 (my G gran)
Kristiane 1867 - Came to the US
Emilie 1870-1948, married in Sweden
Olaf Bernhard 1875 - Came to the US

and then we eliminate those who died as infants or emigrated you are left with

Maren
Nils
Emilie

and of course your own line from Ragnhild.  You seem to know the history of Maren.....what about Nils and Emilie?  And then of course if you can find nothing of interest amongst this generation you have to branch out to consider....did Eli have siblings who had children etc?  Another helpful tool is to determine where and perhaps why the photo was taken.  You know it was in Lillestrøm.  Is that where your ancestor lived or was she visiting the other two ladies?  In my own old photos family members seemed to have group photos taken when they  had special visitors that they didn't see often.  Of course too these ladies might be relatives from your grandmother's father's side!

Food for thought....

Jean

Thanks again for your considerations!

Maren is my best guess for being one of the ladies, she lived a long time in Lillestrøm, I've got her there in the 1875, 1900 and 1910 censuses. My mother's uncle Otto (Ragnhild's youngest) also grew up with them.

Emilie is less likely, she married in Sweden with 3-4 children. But still a possibility!

My GG gran Eli seems to have been living in the same area of Michigan for about 50 years, it would be fun if somebody who remembers her or the children reads this! Nils I have no history of. (yet)

There is a lot of info available from Norwegian archives, this lady "Tilly Eathund" Olaf married may be here:
("Eathund" sounds like originally "Østlund" in sweden to me)

http://www.digitalarkivet.no/cgi-win/webcens.exe?slag=visbase&sidenr=9&filnamn=EMIOSLO&gardpostnr=97383&personpostnr=97383#nedre

A Mathilde Østlund from Warmland, Sweden goes to America aged 8 here in 1893, however no sign of Laura Østlund/"Eathund"..

Hi again everybody!

My family tree is now updated thanks to helpful Rootschatters!

For those of special interest, this link provides a touching story about my ggran Eli's hardship with her first husband Ole in Norway:

http://slektsforskning.wordpress.com/st%C3%A6ringen/

"Et heim ved Stæringen" = "A home by lake Stæringen"

(Unfortunately in Norwegian only, but Google translator may handle the most...)

Eli may however have caused some of the problems she ran into herself, in the 1875 census she is in prison with baby Olaf Bernhard....

("diebarn" = "baby being breastfed")

I'll soon be back with another emigrant, Nebraska this time!

Jan in Norway.
