WWII NZ Nominal Rolls on "Ancestry"COMPLETED THX
« on: Sunday 05 June 11 09:08 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

Today's dim question - did the men (and women) listed in these rolls actually go overseas to fight?

If the answer is "Yes", apart from ordering each person's war record, is there any other way I can see how long, and where, they served overseas, and the dates of coming and going?

Thank You
Jean

Hi Jean,

No, they didn't. The nominal rolls were only a list of the available manpower that might be called up.

I have an ancestor who appeared on the roll but never went. The personnel files held at Archives only relate to those who were called up and served, as far as I know.

To answer your second question this site might help.

Hi Jean,

You can get WW2 Service records from Trentham Defence Archives.  It's free, so you have nothing to lose by checking it out.  And maybe heaps to gain!!

New Zealand Defence Force Archives.
New Zealand Military Services (Army, Navy & Air Force) records are now archived at NZ Defence Force Archives in Trentham, Upper Hutt. NZDF Archives holds the files of all those who served in New Zealand’s military forces from 1st January 1921 to the present day.

The link below will take you to the NZ Defence Force website, where you can access details of what is available, and about how to apply for a copy of your ancestor’s service records.

13 February, 2011:- As at this date, and according to the NZDF website, the first record request is provided free of charge, any further requests within a 12 month period will be charged at the rate of $28 per file, payable in advance.
Downloadable application form on site.

Thank You to Spades and Jeanne for your contribution, and the new sites to check out.
Hurrah - more research possibilities.
