Early death of a Harriet Jones at the Anchor Inn, Wrexham
« on: Monday 06 June 11 17:55 BST (UK) »
My gt gt grandmother died of pneumonia and 8 months pregnant whilst living with her husband and young family at the Anchor Inn, Mount Street, Wrexham in 1905. Her father was the publican at the time. She died on 26th November 1905.

I have a copy of her death certificate but does anyone now if I can look on line for any newspaper articles of that time, or does anyone have access to past newspapers, possibly the Wrexham Leader who may be able to look for me.

I see on google that there is still a pub in Mount Street possibly now called the Nags Head Inn!

Would be grateful for any help

Thank you

The Anchor was knocked down quite a few years  ago.
It was not on Mount St, but closer to  the corner of Salop Road and Caia Road where Colour Supplies is.
It was one of the Wrexham Lager Pubs.
A N Palmer centre have copies of the papers on micro film, they will check for you for a fee.

Thank you so much for this, I've seen the A N Palmer details on the web and will make contact. Given it was a large pub I'm hopeful there may be some details in the paper.

Kind regards

It was one of the Wrexham Lager Pubs.

I meant it was a Lager ( beer) pub, not that it was large in size. In fact it wasn`t that big , I used to go there . :)

Hi powderpuff,

Just came across your post with interest.
My grandmother was born at the Anchor Inn in 1910. My research shows that her father was John Robert Davies and mother was Eunice Lilian Jones, it was her parents who ran the Anchor Inn Robert and Ziphora Jones. I haven't found a reference to Harriet, I'd be interested in knowing more about her.

Hi Meic

I'm not sure if there is any link between Harriet Jones and your Robert and Ziphora Jones. Harriet died in 1905 and her husband and children moved on. I've found the family in the 1911 census in Manley Street.

It's possible Robert & Ziphora took over running the Anchor Inn after Harriet died.

Kind regards

Hello PP  :)

So Harriet was Jones after her marriage?

1901 at Anchor

Thomas Dicker Head age 49  born Bangor, Flints  Publican and Coal Miner
Mary Ann Dicker Wife age 47 born Ruthin
Owen Jones Brother-in-law age 30 Married born Rhosddu   Coal Miner Hewer
Harriet Jones Dau age 29 Married  born Ruthin
Thomas Dicker Jones Grandson age 11  born Moss
Mary Ann Jones Granddaughter age 9  born Moss
Clara Jones Granddaughter age 7  born Rhosrobin
Maria Jones Granddaughter age 5 born Wrexham
Cissie Jones Granddaughter age 6 Months  born Wrexham
William Cheste boarder age 68  Labourer  born Oldcastle, Leith

Think the brother-in-law is incorrect on 1901 image because Owen and Harriet are together in Moss on 1891:

Owen Jones Head age 24  born Moss
Harriet Jones Wife age 22 born Moss
Thomas Jones son age 12?  born Moss

and Thomas and Maryann Dicker on the same page.
