Folan family from Spiddal
« on: Thursday 09 June 11 00:23 BST (UK) »

I am looking for info about a Foley/Folan family from Spiddal. My great grandmother Mary Foley was born about 1879 and went to San Francisco about 1900. Her parents were Patrick and Catherine Folan.  Catherine's maiden name was also Folan. Two of Catherine's brothers, Coleman (1862-1912) and Michael (1849-1897), and two of Mary's siblings, Norah (1893-1975) and John (Jack) also went to San Francisco. I'm not certain if Patrick and Catherine stayed in Spiddal.    The Folans had cousins with the last name Walsh (who may have been from Tully).

I was told that they were from Spiddal by a distant relative who found my tree on ancestry.com.   I have no supporting docs.  I found a mention in an online book that Michael Foley was from Connemara.  Unfortunately the author's sources aren't shown online.

I realize that this  is a long shot because I have only vague information and the names are very common.  Any info about this family would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Christine Brown

Very very very common name in Spiddal.  Tully is 6 miles west of Spiddal by the way...different parish. Foley is very uncommon in west Galway , I suspect Folan  became Foley in Ellis Island.

Have you found any likely lads in

1. The Griffith valuation....which townland ? Search for Patrick Folan or Folan and try to isolate the townlands.

http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/index.xml

Search the barony of Moycullen only and isolate P Folans and their townlands and post townlands  in here. Most are in the parish of Killanin meaning probably west of Spiddal village. Some are in Moycullen parish which could mean east of Spiddal village. Kilcummin parish is around Tully.

2. The 1901 census, which Folans are in the SAME townland  where you isloated a Patrick or P Folan in the Griffith Valuation ?

I believe that this is the Walsh family in Tully that my Folans are related to

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000813638/

I believe that Mary Walsh  (the mother in the census form) had the maiden name Folan. I suppose she could be the sister of Patrick or Kate.

There was a Pat and Kate Folan family not far from Tully

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000813470/

but Honor is older than the Nora that came to San Francisco.  (I suppose she could have lied about her age when she came to USA)

I'll keep digging.

In the meantime here’s some information on Mary Folan.
