Can anyone recommend any good websites with information on the slipper mills of the Rossendale Valley?  Especially in Waterfoot/Bacup area?

Thanks

Lisa

Hi Lisa
It depends on what information you are looking into.
I don't know of any websites but there is a lot of written information at The Museum in Whitaker Park, the local reference library in Rawtenstall and also at Bacup Nats.

I worked in the Library at Rossendale College and there was a book entitlled "The History of Footwear in the Rossendale Valley". I think the original ended up at Preston Records Office but they may have a copy at Rawtenstall Library.

If you let me know what exactly you are looking into I will try and guide you to the best source.

In my hubby's family tree there are lots of people who worked at the slipper mills,  I really just wanted to get an idea of what it was like, etc.  We still have one relative in Waterfoot, but we live in the midlands and don't get to go up there very often.  Which is why I wondered if there was anything on the internet.  They worked there during the late 1800's up to probably the 1940's.  my father in law remembers going to visit one of the cotton mills where his aunt worked in the early 1940's.  I don't know if there are any records of employees for any of the old mills?

I don't think any records survived of the employees as these would have been in the thousands.

The Footwear Industry in Rossendale didn't really finish until the late 1980's and I worked as an office junior in one of the largest factories when I first left school.

I would think that Rossendale Museum has the most comprehensive collection of photographs. I will have a look for you when I am next in

Bacup Times is a useful website for history on the area. The lady who hosts the website also runs "The Nat".

You could also try posting on rossendale online forum in the history expats section. The members are a goldmine of information.
