Army Uniform and rank ID please
« on: Thursday 09 June 11 23:23 BST (UK) »
Could someone please ID this uniform and rank.
The writing looks like the surname is Carpenter. The only person of that name in the family was Ernie Carpenter my G Grandmothers sisters husband. The date looks like 1933?

I have no Idea where he came from. So I am sorry that I can give no other help towards this.

Thank you

I think the writing actually says something like "Fargo Camp 1933" :)  It might even be "1953" in which case is it some kind of ID number rather than a date?  The photo's definitely not as late as the 50s (in fact I'd question whether it's even as late as 1933, but the uniform experts would have to confirm that).

Thanks again Prue.

At first look I thought it was from WW1 but for the date.

Fargo camp is still in existence its an ammo compound now down by Larkhill on Salisbury Plain
Cant get the cap badge....looks like he has spurs and they look Royal Artillery or Engineers collar badges...no medal ribbons so possibly between 1922 and later Maybe a Territorial?

I agree with a TA man. Where was Ernie Carpenter living in the '20s - early '30s? The artillery moved the lanyard to the right shoulder c1920, and almost all units re-introduced collar badges about the same time.

Thank you Ken.

He is carrying a batton. Would this suggest that he was an Officer / SNCO or other rank?

A few thoughts.
The 'baton' is a swagger stick, carried for smartness when 'walking out', off duty, in uniform, and not a sign of rank.  With no chevrons etc he will be a Gunner, if the collar badges can be identified as Royal Artillery.
I think 1933 more likely than '53.
Could the cap badge be the RHA insignia?  Probably not, as it has more of an oval shape.
Possibly a yeomanry/TA unit cap badge?
