Mckenzies in Gairloch
« on: Friday 10 June 11 10:39 BST (UK) »
I'm searching for my 3x great grandfather William McKenzie and am chasing a lead that his parents were John and Katherine (nee Bayne) who married in Gairloch in November 1806.
They had a son called William born in Gairloch in 1810 and (if he's the right one) he left for Wigan, Lancashire when he was about 20 and spent the rest of his life there.
If anyone has any more information about John and Katherine I'd be very grateful.
Thanks for reading.
Paul

Hi Paul,

According to John and Katherine's marriage record (23 Nov 1806):

John was the son of William MacKenzie, tenant in Melvaig (Gairloch).
Katherine was the daughter of William Bayne, tenant in Melvaig.

This could be John & Catherine in Melvaig in 1841:

John MacKenzie 58 Tenant
Catherine 53
John 28
Ann 21
Margaret 20
Alexander 15
Murdo 11
Alexander 1

I guess the 1 year old Alexander could be an illegitimate son of one of John's daughters. William is not here, which is fine, because it would match the info you have that he left for Wigan around 1830.

Although I have lots of BMD records for Gairloch, I don't have any that match the family members that appear in 1841.

Cheers,
Kiko

Thank you very much.
Now I need to establish if the William born to John and Katherine was indeed my William.
A few of the names of John and K/Catherine's children crop up again and again in subsequent generations, so it looks possible.
First step, I guess, is to find out if he survived. I don't suppose you have records of the death of a William which could be this one?
Also, is the record of John and Katherine's marriage in a format you can email to me?
Thanks again, I really do appreciate your help. I've been stuck at this point for years now and to finally sense some progress is very exciting.

Hi Paul,

I'm sending you a PM for the marriage of John/Katherine and William's birth.

I'll check also if I have anything for:

Margaret born 24 SEP 1816
Murdoch born 16 OCT 1829
Alexander born 30 MAR 1826

If you have proof that William's parents were John & Katherine Bayne; and you also have some proof (census for example) that he was born in Gairloch, then it's very probable that this is his family. There weren't so many Bains/Baynes in Gairloch at the time, and the only other marriage of a John Mackenzie / Catherine Bayne or Bain I know of was in 1832.

OK, it looks quite clear that the family in the 1841 census belongs to the William MacKenzie that was born 26 DEC 1810 in Gairloch.

Margaret and Alexander's records show both of them born to John Mackenzie, tenant in Melvaig, and Catherine Bayne.

As for the 1-year old Alexander, he could be Margaret's child. There's a baptism in Gairloch 27 NOV 1840, parents John MacKenzie and Margaret MacKenzie.

Cheers,
Kiko
