Totally lost looking for a birth.
« on: Saturday 11 June 11 19:40 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone

This is my first message on an Ireland board and any help would be gratefully received.

I am trying to trace the birth and family of a friend's mother and have looked carefully at various sites suggested for info but with no luck.
The lady I am seeking is Mary Teresa DOCHERTY and her exact date of birth was March 23rd 1911, place of birth according to her death certificate - "Eire" which I realise isn't very helpful.    I have looked at the 1911 census and as I thought, there were far too many Marys to choose from.

I am maybe too hopeful, but wondered if the exact date of birth would eventually mean success.

Thanks for reading this and I have fingers crossed that someone can help.

NC.

Unfortunatly the BMD index is by year and quarter, so the exact date of birth will not help that much, unless you order the possible certs to check

Do you have Mary's father's name and occupation from her marriage cert ?

that could help you find Mary and her father on the 1911 census, and determine a location.

Do we know the date  the Irish 1911 census was taken?

Also, the birth may not have been registered for some time, and would therefore appear in the next quarter.

2 April 1911

p.s. good point about the quarter - could be under Jan/Mar or Apr/Jun

I had thought of the possibility of either quarter for the birth.  We haven't yet got her marriage certificate although we know she married in Coventry in 1957.   We'd only get father's name and occupation from that wouldn't we?  I wasn't even sure if the Irish registration method was the same as the English - hence the hope that someone could magically come up with her birth.

Will Father be traceable in 1911 just from his name and occupation?

I think you would probably need to confirm the father's name anyway, especially since Doherty is such a common surname.  Information on death certs is not always accurate, so you may need the additional clues.

There are not that many Mary Doherty (or variations) age under one year on the 1911 census and most have an age of a couple of months. Ages for very young children are not always transcribed but do appear on the actual form - they are usually rounded to the nearest month, but some say under 1 month. It's quite possible that knowing a father's name and occupation could narrow down your list quite considerably...

The Irish BMD indexes work in the same way as the English ones - you search a BMD Index on familysearch (instead of FreeBMD) which gives you name, year / quarter, registration distrct and register references... then you order potential certs from the GRO with these - see : Introduction to Irish Records

I would obtain the marriage certificate. As Shane says, the father's name would help with the [free!] Irish 1911 census.
Do you have any idea of where in Ireland they were from?

Thanks for the latest comments.  I am definitely going to get the marriage certificate and will post the results on here hopefully for your further assistance.   Let's hope that Mary's dad isn't deceased by 1957.  :'(

Don't go away! I'll be back!
