Captain Cavanaugh
« on: Sunday 12 June 11 16:28 BST (UK) »
I posted this yesterday on Ireland-General

Hon. Robert Macauley, attorney, Menomonie (WI), was born February 18, 1838,
in Glasgow, Scotland. His parents, Robert and Margaret (Cavanaugh) Macauley,
immigrated to the United States in 1843.... The grandfather on the mother's
side was Captain Cavanaugh, who distinguished himself in France, while
fighting under the illustrious Wellington.

The above is from:
Historical and Biographical Album of the Chippewa Valley, Wisconsin
Chicago, A. Warner, 1891-92, p. 476.

I Would like to find out more about this grandfather, Captain Cavanaugh. It
seems the grandmother was named Harriet, possibly Harriet Wright, b. 1785,
Ireland. The father and mother were born in Belfast, just before 1810.

Any leads would be appreciated.

I cannot find anyone of that spelling on the London Gazette website. There are several Cavenaghs in that period that you could look at; including Arthur c1790 and one (maybe two) Nathaniels a bit later. The LG also has several entries for a Nathaniel being declared bankrupt in the 1820s.

There was also a James Gordon Cavenagh who was an army surgeon from 1800 to 1825 when he went on the half-pay of the 62nd Regiment.

Thank you.

Arthur is a possibility; there's a grandson named William Arthur.

New information: it's very likely that the Captain's firs name was William.
