How to find parents?
« on: Wednesday 15 June 11 08:45 BST (UK) »
My ggg grandfather was married in 1835 in Newcastle Upon Tyne and died in Australia in 1860. His death certificate shows parents as "Unkown". I believe he was born in Berwick Upon Tweed in 1802 but have yet to be able to prove this.

My online searches has so far not shown a birth or baptism for Peter Purves (Purvis).
Any suggestions on how to trace his birth/baptism would be much appreciated.

Mike Purves
Melbourne Australia

Hi and welcome
Have you looked at the original entry for the marriage in the register?   Often the witnesses can be family members so we may be able to trace back that way.  Any idea when he went out to Australia?  Census entries here would be helpful too.

Does his death cert give age? Place of birth?  What were his children's names?

Buying his marriage cert from the above details may give parents names/pob.
Ireland, Co Antrim: Kerr; Hollinger; Forsythe; Moore
Ireland, Co Louth: Carson; Leslie
Ireland, Co Kerry: Ferris
Scotland, Perthshire/Glasgow:  Stewart
England, Devon/Cornwall: Ferris, Gasser/Jasser/Jesser, Norman

Hi

I've just looked at the marriage entry that Sue found on the familysearch pilot (page 585 of St Andrew 1825-1838)

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=waypoint&s=waypointsOnly&c=fs%3A1309819&w=0

This has no info about parents. They were married by licence and the witnesses were Fanny Scott and Thomas Scott.

As Sue suggests, it is only Barbara who is stated as 'of Berwick on Tweed'  There is no info on Peter's parish.

On SP there is a birth in Berwick of Peter Purves for 1803 and one for the same name for 1795 there are no others in Berwick within the 10 years 1795 - 1805.
