At this site -

http://210.8.122.120/indexes/index_search.asp?searchid=54

you can find a will for James Purvis died 8 Feb 1860 intestate, mention of son, name unknown, in England.

Does the death certificate gives details about years in the colonies?

James Purves (occupation, architect/engineer) arrived Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) prior to 1835 to build/supervise stone bridges, then moved to Melbourne in 1837 ("Land Lime Leisure by Charles Hollinshed et al 1982, pub Shire of Flinders).

Do you have a death cert for this James?  The information may be invaluable.

Peters wife Barbara died in child birth, child James b 29 Sept 1835 and sent to live with aunt (surname Russell?) in Berwick.

Isn't he still with the Cairns in 1841/1851?  Yes he is the nephew but not in Berwick.

Re wivenhoe's find  -

Only James Purv*s  dying in Victoria in 1860 was aged 54. No other information.

Other one was b. 1831 so wouldn't fit.

Not sure about this - have you any other substantiating evidence that this was Peter's son:

Quote
James (son of Peter) arrives in Melbourne to join his father 1852 aboard the Thomas Lawry left Aryshire August 1852 (inward shipping records).

Just wondering why he sailed from Ayrshire when we have him Newcastle and (possibly) Berwickshire .

Peter Purves (stone mason) arrived Van Diemens Land (Tasmania) 1835 to help his (alleged) brother James with bridges. Peter moved to Melbourne 1842 (intra coastal shipping records).

Doesn't fit with census data as this Peter and son James are in the UK in 1841.

Just found an immigration record ~

James Purves, aged  37,  arrived  26 August 1852 aboard The Ayrshire  Departed london.

I think your info may have been a little out  :-\

Hi Mike

What evidence do you have of Peter going to Tasmania in 1835?

gnu

Hi gnu,

Only that his wife died in 1835 during child birth, his alleged brother James was already out here, and this death certificate shows "years in colony" works back to 1835.

Are you thinking this is Peter's brother James?  ie not in Taz as early as stated?

Can you give all the information on the death certificate please - burial place, informant, and include anything left blank.
