Are you thinking this is Peter's brother James?  ie not in Taz as early as stated?

Not really - I'm thinking that this is a rather old  'son'  :-\

The 'folklore' that Mike has doesn't seem to fit with the info that we've all found  - apart from the marriage,  wife's death and his death.

Wivenhoe - nothing else on the death info that I have (an index only)  - I think you have to buy them/search for them in Australia.  I'm in Newcastle, Northumberland  :)

Unmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Not sure about this - have you any other substantiating evidence that this was Peter's son:

Quote
James (son of Peter) arrives in Melbourne to join his father 1852 aboard the Thomas Lawry left Aryshire August 1852 (inward shipping records).

Just wondering why he sailed from Ayrshire when we have him Newcastle and (possibly) Berwickshire .

Just found an immigration record ~

James Purves, aged  37,  arrived  26 August 1852 aboard The Ayrshire  Departed london.

I think your info may have been a little out  :-\

gnu,

I'll re check that info with the relative who supplied it to me.

Have also just had a phone call from my uncle which throws more light on, or a spanner in the works, not sure which.

James Purves (alleged brother of Peter) death certificate shows parents as Liddle Purves (profession Engineer) and Mary Scott with his (James) birth place as Berwick on Tweed Scotland.

I can access a copy of Peters death certificate from my father.

An IGI record for James with those parents in 1814, Coldingham  but it's a patron submission. Will check SP.

Thanks gnu,

So I guess my next move would be to obtain, if possible, a death record for Liddle Purves and/or his wife to see if there is a Peter listed amongst their offspring. I know civil death records show offspring, would parish records show the same?

Well its 9pm here and I have to be up at 4am so I'm off to bed. You have all given me so much to think about and your help has been unbelievable. I will probably be on again tomorrow evening my time.

Re Peters death certificate, his son James is the informant and Peters parents are listed as "unkown"

Good night from "not so sunny" Melbourne Australia.

For when you return  ;D

Census info :

We have:

1851 Coxons lane, Berwick on Tweed, Northumberland
 HO107/2421/515/41

David Cairns, 71, farmer and house proprietor, b. Scotland
Alice, w, 55, b. -do-
John,s,  17, carpenter, b. Berwick
James L, s,  17, farmer's son, b. -do-
Elisabeth, d, 14, dressmaker, b. -do-
James Purvis, nephew, 15, carpenter, b. Newcastle

1841 (as found by Gortonboy)
Coxon Lane, Berwick on Tweed, Northumberland
HO107/844/3/35/16

David Cairns, 55, husbandman, b. Scotland
Alice, 40, b. Scotland
John, 7
James, 7
Elizabeth, 4
Peter Purves, 35, stonemason, b. Scotland
James Purves, 5,
Elizabeth Purves, 80, b. Scotland
Others born Northumberland

Birth (IGI) 28 Oct 1836, Golden Square Presbyterian or Scotch Chirch, Berwick on Tweed
Elizabeth Cairns d/o David Cairns and Alice Purves.

From Alice's age, I would say that she is the Alison Purves, bpt Bunkle and Preston 7 Nov 1795 (found by Fifer)

This would  strongly suggest that the parents of Alice and Peter are James Purves and Elizabeth (Betty) Waldie.

I rest my case m'lord  ;D

A bit more that will sort out the relationship between James, the bridge builder , and Peter.  This info as I wrote it down while researching:

* Also baptism at the same church as Elizabeth Cairns:
11 Nov 1833 John Liddle Cairns and James Liddle Cairns (b. 24 Oct). parents David Cairns and Alice Purves

* Liddle Purves was described as a mason in his marriage entry to Mary Scott 20 May 1813, Coldingham (irregular marriage at Coldstream previously.

* I've just found that Liddle Purves was the son of James Purves and Elizabeth Waldie,. Baptised in Bunkle and Preston on 3 May 1789.

So James was Peter's nephew rather than his brother.

Summary ~

James Purves m. Elizabeth Waldie, 1786

Known children:
Jean - 1787
Liddle - 1789 - married Mary Scott 1813. Children - James (1814)  (Death record in 1870 gave the wrong age - he was 55 not 65)
Christiana - 1791
Alison - 1795 married David Cairns (not found date). Children - John Liddle, James Liddle (1833), Elizabeth (1836)
Peter - 1803 - married Barbara Scott 1835. Children - James (1835)
