Dempsey, Hart, Rennie
« on: Wednesday 15 June 11 16:44 BST (UK) »
My Grandfather Victor Frank Dempsey was born Auberon St  Silvertown  1919 his parents were Eleanor Hart and Owen Dempsey.  Have a fair bit of information on his mother Eleanor (who was previously married to Charles Adair Rennie before marrying Owen Dempsey in March 1918.  Woolwich

Eleanor parents, Thomas Alexander Hart and Elizabeth Cornforth ran the Mariner's Arms on Albert Rd.  Her sister Matilda married Albert George Pope, a lot of the Popes worked for the Keillers.  Thomas Alexander Hart's father was John Alexander Fustic Hart and he was a Mulatto born in Jamaica 1774, would love to find out more on this branch also.  Thomas was born in Gloucester 1830

Charles Adair Rennie's father was John McDonald Rennie born Marylebone abt 1829, am unsure if any connection to the John Rennie who had something to do with London Bridge, I can't find John on any census's before 1871.

The main person I'm looking for information on is Owen Dempsey, his name may also be Harold Owen Dempsey or Henry Owen Dempsey, think he was born about 1876.  According to Eleanor and Owen's marriage certificate his fathers name was Richard Henry Dempsey who worked WBC I am guessing this may be Woolwich Borough Council????

Owen served in WW1 both in RFA and AVC (British Army Veterinary Corps)
We know nothing else on him and would like to find out more if possible.

My Grandfather never knew his father Owen as after my grandfathers mother,  Eleanor died in 1921 when my grandfather was only about 2 and a half his father cleared out and as far as I am aware my grandfather never saw him again :-(  My Grandfather was raised by his mother's sister Matilda Pope (nee Hart)

If any one knows anything of Owen Dempsey I'd love to hear from you, I have tried to find him on census's but nothing, have found a few but am fairly certain they are not him.

Or if any names ring a bell I am happy to swap info

Hi

There is a death registration for an Owen Dempsey aged 78 in 1956
September volume of 1956
Volume number 5c
Page 236
Registration district Chelsea

If he was a serving soldier in 1918 he might be stationed in Woolwich but have no connection with the area or even have been born in England e.g. there is an Owen Dempsey birth in Dublin in the Irish civil registration index for 1876 and one also in Rathbone.

Regards

Valda

Hello,

My name is Neil Baker.  John Alexander Fustic Hart was my great great great grandfather, Charles Adair Rennie and Eleanor Hart were my great grand parents.  My grandfather Alexander Rennie married my grandmother Eleanor Ball (from Northallerton, Yorkshire, uk).  My mother was Margaret Eleanor Rennie then was Margaret Baker and is now Margaret Smart.  I heard Owen mentioned and possible bigamy....it's all very intriguing!  I assume we are related in some way as we both have the same great grandmother.  Hi!

Hi Neil

Yes we think it is possible (but not proven) that Owen may have been a bigamist.  found a marriage for someone named Owen Dempsey to another person.  Owen seems to be listed at same address as Eleanor 1918 and 1919 Elec Roll but not with this other woman,  but then from 1920 onward he is with this other woman (Eleanor did die 1921 though, as you probably know)  I may well be wrong, but you never know.

The marriages

Name:   Owen Dempsey
Spouse Surname:   Rennis  (that should be Rennie)
Date of Registration:   Jan-Feb-Mar 1918
Registration District:   Woolwich
Inferred County:   Kent
Volume Number:   1d
Page Number:   2256a

Name:   Owen Dempsey
Spouse Surname:   Ansell
Date of Registration:   Jan-Feb-Mar 1916
Registration District:   St George Hanover Square
Inferred County:   London
Volume Number:   1a
Page Number:   1116
