Missing daughte/granddaughter?
« on: Wednesday 15 June 11 20:13 BST (UK) »
Hi there,

I have looked and looked for a marriage and birth of Hannah Gosling and her daughter Annie.  Can anyone help please?

Thanks,

Peter

Name     Relation    Marital Status    Gender    Age    Birthplace    Occupation    Disability
Isaac PATTISON      Head      M      Male      68      Paisley, Scotland      Tinner
Ann PATTISON      Wife      M      Female      64      Guisbro, York, England
Hannah GOSLING      Dau      W      Female      30      Darlington, Durham, England      General Servant
Annie GOSLING      Grandaughter            Female      8      Hull, York, England      Scholar

Living at 16 Union Cottages, Middlesbrough, York, England

There is no is no sign of any of these people in 1891 or beyond (Isaac died in 1888, and a search on here for his wife's death has currently proved unsuccesful).

Hi Pauline,

I don't know; the trouble is, I have found Isaac and Ann Pattison in the census from 1841-1881, and there is no sign of a daughter named Hannah Pattison (an Ann, born 1846 but in Hutton Henry, County Durham).

Ann Pattison junior (bizarley) married a man named ... Isaac Pattison!  Maybe he was a cousin but I can't find a connection yet.  She was widowed in June 1873, and I can not see her after that.

I do not know why our relations had to make the search for them so difficult!  Could Ann and Hannah be the same person?  Age and birthplace do not match, so I would say no.

No-one "knows".
But that 1873 birth looks worth a punt to me.
From that you work on Hannah...

It looks to me as if Isaac has remarried between 1871 and 1881.  Both wives are called Ann but different ages and birth places.

In 1871 his wife, Ann, is 64 and from Cumberland
In 1881 his wife, Ann, is still 64 and from Guisborough

There is a marriage between Isaac PATTISON and Ann GORDON 3/1881 in Middlesbrough

There are a couple of deaths for Ann PATTISON of about the right age in Middlesbrough between 1871 and 1881

Maybe Hannah Gosling was a step-daughter??

Wow, I always assumed Ann (being a bit of a traveller), maybe got confused and put down the wrong place of birth (likewise, a quick look on familysearch does through up some possible baptism in Cumerland).

I never suspected she may have died before.  Amazing; I have emailed the register office about the marriage and will post details here.

Dependant upon this, I shall then look into the birth of Jane Ann Gosling in 1873.

Thank you again!

Ok ... the 1881 marriage.  The wedding cert shows that Isaac Pattison, was 68 a widower, and a tinner.

So you where right!  Thank you.  He married two different women!

Also, Ann his first wife and my ancestor died in Hartlepool back in 1871!  Shows how you should analyse your documents.  Thank you again.

I am interested in seeing if Ann Gordon, born c. 1817 in Guisborough, can be found in the census.  She married in Isaac Pattison in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire in 1880.

Can anyone spot her in 1871/61/51 etc.

Thank you,

Peter

Had a quick look, nothing obvious.  Before we try to delve further can you confirm that Ann GORDON was a spinster when she married Isaac Pattison.
