Aspenden - spelling and pronunciation
« on: Thursday 16 June 11 22:03 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how Aspenden is pronounced in the local Hertfordshire dialect? Also how much the spelling changed in the past.

While it is currently spelt Aspenden you won't find any entries for it in the LDS catalogue, as they have it listed under Aspeden and this is presumably how it is written in the church registers. Is anyone aware of any other spelling variants?

Thanks in advance.

Sue  ;)

I don't know the place (although I live in Herts) but wouldn't be at all surprised to hear it pronounced something like Aspden.     They shorten things a lot around here, as in Weemsted for Wheathampstead or Snorbens for St. Albans.  :D

Miles away from me too in Hemel Hempstead I'm afraid.  Never been there.

If you go to the Genealogy in Hertfordshire website, click ENTER and then select PLACES from the left hand menu, then A and then ASPENDEN there is a lot of information about this parish, including a map entry from 1808 where it is spelt Aspenden.

Thanks everyone. Several lines to follow up, but still a way to go.

I won't put my conclusions yet as I don't want to influence anyone else with suggestions.  ;)
