Hi,
I don't know much about navy records so hope someone will be able to tell me if there is any way to find out where the Constance was on 25th September 1920? I have just downloaded records from the National Archives that show that my husband's Gt Uncle deserted the Constance on that date (never to be heard of since, as far as I know) and was wondering if I could find out where it was? Family lore has it that he ended up in Canada, but who knows whether that's true or not?! The story goes that two brothers deserted ship, but the reality is that the other brother was on HMS Amphion when it sank.

Wendy,
I just googled HMS Constance September 1920 and found a rating called Jenner who was honourably discharged from that ship at Portsmouth on 26th September 1920 so on  25th September 1920 HMS Constance was in Portsmouth, England.

Hi Wendy

If you search the National Archive's online catalogue for Constance (no HMS) and the date in ADM you will see that both the ships log and medical log are in the NA. One log ends on the 26th September which suggests that was the end of a tour. You really need to research the log as they may have recorded all desertions during the tour with the same date. An RN captain would not have had the authority to award an dishonourable discharge. It would have been done later by 'higher authority'.

Ken,
Thank you for your advice...I will download this record, in fact I have just spent ten mins trying to find it to no avail!  Is it on the 'documentsonline' page? I am not a big user of their website and am having trouble finding where to enter the info you told me to!

The catalogue itself is here - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue/ - which you should save.
