98th Reg. Of Foot- Athlone 1871 ?
« on: Friday 17 June 11 20:14 BST (UK) »
Hi,   I wonder if anyone could confirm that the 98th Reg of Foot was in Athlone around 1871?   I think I have found my gt.gt.grandparents  church marriage extract, (but no civil entry)  but would like confirmation that his reg. was actually there at this time.  First child that I know abt. is born Jamaica 1874.

Thank you

The 98th Regiment were in Athlone from May to October 1871. The main force was in Barbados in 1874, so he must have been with a detachment in Jamaica.

Hi Ken,  Thank you for the dates in Athlone... I'm nearly there, but not quite :( .  The church marriage entry I downloaded from the IFHF says their date of marriage is 03/02/ 1871.

So!!!   The entry I received is not an original, therefore it is possible there may be a transcription error, especially if the registers are old.    Secondly, it is possible the couple are not mine, but with the same names.

I got the name and no. of regiment from another childs birth cert in Karachi 1882. (no cert for Kingston,Jamaica, just census entries)

I appreciate you taking the time to check the dates for me, thank you.

Joseph Kelly number 142 98th regiment attested at Belfast 18th Oct 1857,,he stated he was 18 years old,, {so b c1839},,born in the parish of Donaghmore, near the town of Dungannon in County Tyrone.
He was 5ft 4" ,fresh complexion, hazel eyesand brown hair.
He served for 26 years leaving the army in 1884.

And now the crucial bits  ;)

he served
at home 1857-58
East Indies 1858-67
home 1867-72
West Indies {including Jamaica} 1872-75
Malta 1875-1880
East Indies 1880-83
home 1884

he married Mary Ryan in St Marys chuch.Athlone  2/2/1871...there seems to be another marriage crossed out,,,to a bridget ?  in Boyle,Roscommon.

So...looking at the dayes and places he served,,and the date and place of the marriage,,,i would say you have your man  ;)

Oh my goodness.    That is absolutely wonderful... :D      I really can't express how grateful I am.. (even my comp crashed for a few mins  ;D  )  . We never thought we would be able to access this info without going to Kew. :D

Well poor Mary Ryan was only home abt a year and she died in 1885 from Tubercular peritonitis.  Joseph died in 1911 oldage /senility.

Thank you again so much.... :)

Looking for Arthur who may have been a relative of Joseph, hopefully?  :)
