Marriage in 1945, Surrey
« on: Sunday 19 June 11 08:08 BST (UK) »
Hello

I'm not really sure where to put this, hopefully someone can help.

On Free BMD I found a marriage in 1945 in Surrey N. W..
I can't put the name of the bride as I'm not sure if she's living or not, but hopefully I can make some sense.

Could she be born in 1926 in Farnham - is that likely, it would be a good age, would Farnham fall under Surrey N.W.?
There isn't another marriage or birth with that name in Surrey, so I'm guessing it's her.

Secondly, the maiden name (can't put it I don't think), doesn't bring up any births or marriages in Surrey but there is one in 1918 in Dartford with right names.

Sorry, I know that's really confusing but hopefully it makes sense.

Any guidance here, I'm a bit confused, just want to make sure I'm on the right track.

Thanks

Age wise it would be entirely plausible for the marriage to fit the birth, bearing in mind events before and at the time of the marriage people were often moving to places miles away from their birthplace and families so the location/district given doesn't always help to swing a decision about a record.

The only way to be reasonably certain if it is for the person you are looking into is to order the cert and refer to the fathers' names and hope the witnesses are names that are family or coneected in some way.

I agree with Glen - the only way is to get certificates.  If you can go to the local registry office where the BMD was registered, the staff there may be able to help you ascertain that you have the right person, before you commit yourself into buying the certificate.

Thanks for the guidance Glen and Nick,

I'll have to agree, it's probably her and her parents probably married in 1918 (closest other than that is 1895).
It's just that usually I can base it off family stories to confirm names, but this is just all records.

I'll have to get the certificates to make absolute sure, though.

Have you considered that 'she' may have been married before and widowed at a young age?

If she was born in 1926, she would have had to marry very young, to be a widow by 1945 when she would only have been 19.

In WW2 many women were widows at a young age.

I'm not really sure,

I only found out the marriage two days ago and haven't put much thought in to be honest, it just seemed to fit in.

19 seems a good age, but the husband would have been 43.

I think that's unlikely with such a large age gap.  I also think, if anything, most women actually delayed marriage until the war was over.  One of the reasons for the post-1945 baby-boom.
