How and when did he arrive?
« on: Monday 20 June 11 03:18 BST (UK) »
The 1901 Census shows Fred Doughton was in the Royal Navy on a ship in Malta. I believe he left the Royal Navy in 1911. He married Ellora Martin in 1914 at Wickham, NSW, Australia. I am having trouble finding how and when he arrived in Australia.

Edwards, Stockton, NSW, Australia
Wilson, Reading, Berkshire
McQuillan, Newcastle, NSW, Australia

Thanks for your advice.
I do have his Royal Navy record and the last entry states "Joined RFR Chatham, 1st July 1911". I guess that means he left the navy or joined the reserves. How he went from there to be in Australia in 1914 I do not know.

Hi

Welcome to Rootschat.

There was a crew member F Doughton whose age and birthplace matched the 1901 census who arrived in Sydney on the Omrah 18th Jan 1912, then again as F J Doughton on the Ophir on the 20th June 1912 and then again on the Ballarat on the 16th Oct 1912 as F  Doughton.

It looks like he joined the Merchant Navy, someone more familiar with the merchant Navy may be able to advise on accessing records, these may indicate where and when he left.

Andy

Hi Aussietexans :)

I notice that he has a WW1 service record digitised and available to view on the National Archives of Australia website - this may give more hints about him.

Cheers
Prue

Thanks for all the feedback. Never thought about him joining the merchant navy. Will need to follow up on that. Thanks for the starting me off in the right direction.
I do have all of his WW1 service records of when he was in the Australian Army.

So it appears that Fred arrived in Sydney on the Omrah on 18th January 1912. Can anyone direct me to where I can find out what port and date in the UK that the Omrah departed on this voyage. I wish to try to find if Fred was a passenger or a crew member.

The Omrah departed from the Port of London but gives no departure date - just the arrival date in Sydney. Fred is listed as crew member -  F Doughton  -  AB   - Aged 30 yrs  - born Kelvedon.

Also listed as a seaman on the 20th June 1912 - Ophir - London via Melbourne to Sydney. NSW.

Listed as a seaman on the 26 th October 1912 - Ballarat - London - Sydney. NSW.
