If you search for minnesingers they were a popular and successful choir, so maybe it was a difficult programme, or maybe Samuel found it hard to conduct them. He did not usually conduct that choir it seems judging on the number of concerts that the choir gave. That choir started its smoking concerts in 1875 apparently.
