Samuel Round organist St Thomas's
« on: Monday 20 June 11 17:43 BST (UK) »
I found some old threads about our great grandfather but I can't pm so I have no way of getting in touch with TomPiper or Cherry Lane who had some relevant information about him.
I have researched his earlier life, found him as assistant master of music at Peterborough and at Ninians in Perth and then to Portsea where he died .  I know the circumstances of his death but I would guess that there may be other things about him.I believe someone has some of his music and perhaps some other information about him, anything would be really appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Hi Idlecat,

Welcome to RootsChat.  :)

This is my 6th post in all

Posts made on the Lighter Side and Totally Off Topic boards don't count towards your total, so although you have hit the post button six times, only three show up in your total.  But you should now be able to send personal messages.

If the threads about Samuel Round were of interest, you could always add your questions to those topics if they are relevant to the subject.

LAKE ROAD CHAPEL
Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc , Saturday, September 24, 1898; Issue 6105

FUNERAL of Mr. S. ROUND

The interment of the remains of the late Mr. Samuel Round, of 39, Victoria-road South, took place at the Highland Road Cemetery on Saturday. The deceased who was organist at St. Thomas’s Church for several years, was very popular, and a large crowd of sympathising friends gathered at the graveside. At the cemetery gates the remains, which were enclosed in a polished elm coffin with brass furniture, were met by the choir in surplices, who led the cortege to the church., where the funeral service was conducted by the Rev. Canon E. P. Grant, Vicar of Portsmouth. Mr. Green, one of the deceased’s pupils presiding at the organ. The chief mourners were the deceased’s father and brother and two sons. Other followers included several local organists and a number of Mr. Round’s pupils. There were many floral wreaths. One was sent by members of St. Thomas’s Choir and another by the Vicar. At the conclusion of the service the choir, standing by the graveside, sung “Peace, Perfect Peace”. The funeral arrangements were conducted by Messrs. Russel and Co, Albert Road, Southsea.

These took some searching out in the Hampshire Telegraph (19th century British Newspapers) by putting in a search for Mr. S. Round, after 1890 in Hampshire Telegraph

Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle , Saturday, January 30, 1892; Issue 5760.

Music at All Saints:

Music at All Saints:

There was a crowded attendance on Monday evening in the new iron room attached to All Saints, when the vicar, the Rev. W. Hawkesley explained his idea of starting a new Musical Society in Portsmouth. Eventually it was agreed to form a body, to be called “The Portsmouth Musical Society”, with Mr. Round, the organist, as choirmaster and conductor.

Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle  Saturday, October 8, 1892; Issue 5798

Harvest Festival was held at Portsmouth parish church where the organist. Mr. S. Round FCO presided at the organ and played several selections.

THE PORTSMOUTH CORPORATION AT CHURCH .
Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc, Saturday, November 18, 1893; Issue 5856.

The mayor and corporation attended St Thomas's church on Sunday morning, where the church was crowded and the service was fully choral, and Mr. S. Round presided at the organ.

IN AID OF THE HOSPITAL .
Hampshire Telegraph and Sussex Chronicle etc , Saturday, February 3, 1894; Issue 5867

A concert arranged by the Mayor and Mayoress of Portsmouth on behalf of the hospital was held at the Town Hall last Tuesday evening.  The Minnesingers also rendered four part songs which was hardly a complete success, despite the able leadership of Mr. S. Round.

Thanks for dong that Tom, I managed to gain entry to the newspaper archives with my own library ticket but after many attempts realised that I am totally inept at doing the search properly. I am indebted to you to showing me exactly how to do it, I seem to have a mental block. This information is really interesting to us. Did that last sentence in the report from feb 3rd 1894 read to you as if the contribution made  by the Minnesingers  was a disaster? I wonder what happened?
 Many many thanks
