Sandy, Bedford
« on: Wednesday 22 June 11 14:31 BST (UK) »
Could someone kindly check for me the parents of David Ilsley born in Beeston, Sandy abt 1810?  He married Ann Rook 5 Apr 1830, died 1870.

Many thanks,

Lee :-)

Sandy parish register has been extracted onto the IGI at www.familysearch.org and there's no sign of any Illsleys before 1813. Which means they weren't baptised for whatever reason, usually non-conformity, they were baptised somewhere else, possibly another county, or they're in the register with the spelling mangled. And indeed it's the latter. David Hillesly son of William and Dorothy, born 1806 baptised 27 Jul 1807

Dorothy Ilsley age 76 was buried in Sandy on 8 Nov 1849, and a William Ilsley age 61 was buried there on 11 Sep 1831

In 1851 he was 45 so I'm sure it's the right one.

Now the difficult part. Where did his parents marry? And which Ann Rook did he marry (I've got a large flock of Rooks in my tree, mainly from nearby Henlow and Southill)

Not as difficult as I feared:

William ISLEY married Dorothy SMITH on 30 Dec 1793 at Eaton Socon, Beds

They baptised two children in Tempsford Beds, as Ilsley, then five more in Sandy as Hillesly

This is what I have for Ann Rook:

12 Jul 1812 Southill, parents Wm 1780=1845 and Mary Smith 1779-1841 m. 10 Oct 1799 Southill (the deaths may be dodgy - common names and parallel family living in Biggleswade!).  Various siblings (all IGI)

Can't find either of them or Dorothy Hillsley (all spellings) in 1841 census!   Had a quick check on IGI and can't find a marriage for Wm and Dot, but found another son James!

Really appreciate your help David, thank you.

Lee :-)

Sorry, you can't have Ann Rook bapt 1812 in Southill. She's my 3xg grandmother! She married John Peacock in Old Warden in 1832 and they had a whole flock of Peacocks in Southill. In 1841 Ann Peacock is living with William Rook (but she's also living with her husband!)

In 1851 Ann Ilsley is aged 44 born Not known, so the age is wrong for her to have been born in 1812 (although census ages are notoriously inaccurate). But there's no other Ann Rook baptised in Beds at around 1806/7. It's possible that she was a widow, but you'd need to check the parish register for that

In 1841 and 1861 David is enumerated as ILLSLEY, as is Dorothy in 1841

Sorry to borrow your 3xg grandmother!  I had both sides of her family back to 1700 too.  However, I did have it pencilled in as not def!

Find Ancestry a bit hit and miss for findings name variations, but findmypast usually comes up with something.  I'll look again, thank you.
