Can someone read place of birth?
« on: Thursday 23 June 11 14:41 BST (UK) »
John Collins in Salford
He couldn't write his name when he married, so either he tried this himself, or dictated it to whoever filled in the form. The handwriting on the rest of the form is reasonably regular, a bit like the "Irelan".
At the time it has been read as Kilrea, the code is for Londonderry.

It is strange, because I heard from one grandson and two gt grandsons, who never have been in contact with each other, that John came from Co Cork. One thought from around Boherhue (sp?), another one from Cobh.

So, if it was Co Cork, is there any place that might sound the way this was written?

There is a civil parish called Kilroe in the Kanturk area.
PLEASE POST YOUR QUESTIONS TO THE BOARD, NOT THROUGH PM, so that everybody can take a shot at answering your question and benefit from the information.  I cannot respond to requests through private emails.

Hi ,

Looking at it I think it could possibly be Kildorrery in North Cork.  The end sounds like re ry  and the start looks like an l and a d could have been written over.

Hope I am not putting you on the wrong track.   The records for Kildorrery are not on line on the irish genealogy site.  However as far as I know the Mallow Heritage centre do hold records for this area.  They charge €5 for each record which can sometimes work out expensive. If you are not too sure of the date  you might need to look at a few.   If you don't have much to go on even getting the records won't confirm if you have the right person.

Good luck with it.

Thanks!

I like the Kildorrery. Because Kilrea was so unlikely I got as far as something like Kidrary.

The Mallow Heritage website itself isn't very informative, broken links etc. When accessing it through IHFH I see Kildorrery RC is listed. There are records there between 1857 and 1863  (15 Murphy's) but no Collins.

Kilroe not listed, Kanturk is, and I can see Killeagh ... the search goes on

The code is a clerk's interpretation of what he read. As I explained in my original post, according to descendants he came from Co Cork. As a young boy my husband had heard from his grandmother, a daughter of John, "the family came from Cobh". It could have meant he/they sailed from Cobh. With three sources saying it was Co Cork it's worthwhile to have another look at places there ...

What clerk? When? Where? Haven't a clue what you are on about.
